GOLDEN, Colo. - No. 19 Metro State blanked No. 23 Colorado Mines 3-0 on Friday night for its first shutout win in Golden since 1998. The Roadrunners improved to 10-5-1 overall and 8-4-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while the Orediggers fell to 9-5-1 and 7-4-1. The win was important for regional positioning as the Roadrunners are now 2-0 against CSM this season. Mines was ranked No. 2 in this week's Central Region rankings, while the Roadrunners came in at No. 4.
The win gave Metro State its ninth straight season with 10 or more wins. Head coach
Ken Parsons has led the team during the past eight of those seasons.
Besides a scoreless tie in Golden last season between the two teams, it was Metro State's first shutout over CSM on the road since winning 2-0 on Oct. 28, 1998, and it was just the third shutout victory over Colorado Mines in Golden in school history.
Scott Grode (Gilbert, Ariz./Basha H.S.) scored just one minute and eight seconds into the game, taking a long pass from
Andrew Mejia (Littleton, Colo./Mullen H.S.), and beating the defense for a breakaway.
Mejia scored one of his own just 14 minutes later for a 2-0 lead, as
Chris Yoder (Gilbert, Ariz./Mesquite H.S.) found Mejia open for a long 30-yard shot.
T.J. Thiebaut (Pueblo, Colo./South H.S.) scored his third goal of the season and second against the Orediggers at 61:16 to put the game out of reach. A CSM turnover at the top of the box gave Thiebaut a 1-on-1 with Oredigger goalkeeper Manville Strand.
Metro State dominated the entire game and the Orediggers were held to just one shot on goal the entire game, a weak header from the top of the box in the 75th minute. That save gave goalkeeper
Shailer Thomas (Bloomington, Ill./Bloomington H.S.) his third straight shutout for the Roadrunners.
Metro State outshot CSM 17-9 in the game and 10-1 on goal.
The Roadrunners will travel to Colorado Christian for a 2:30 p.m. game on Sunday.
