Volleyball pulls off amazing comeback for second night in a row

COLORADO SPRINGS -
No. 11 Metro State pulled off an incredible comeback for the second night in a row, rallying for a 16-25, 21-25, 25-21, 25-18, 16-14 win at UC-Colorado Springs on Saturday night.  The Roadrunners improved to 19-4 overall and 11-3 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while UCCS fell to 13-11 and 7-7.

Friday night, Metro State also came back from a two-set deficit at No. 22 Colorado Mines.

On Saturday, Emily Greenhalgh (Conifer, Colo./Conifer H.S.) and Bri Morley (Parker, Colo./Cherokee Trail H.S.) provided the offense from the outside, as Greenhalgh had a career-high 22 kills and hit .233 and Morley had 19 kills and hit .250.  She also had 18 digs.

Alysa Heath (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield H.S.) also had 12 kills and Julie Causseaux (Dumas, Texas/Dumas H.S.) added 10.  Shayne Kovach (Fruita, Colo./Fruita Monument H.S.) hit .500 and had nine kills.

Defensively, Ngoc Phan (Lone Tree, Colo./Cherry Creek H.S.) had a season-high 29 digs and was perfect on serve-receive, where the team struggled by allowing eight aces.  Greenhalgh and Causseaux each had six blocks.

Vanessa Gemignani (Colorado Springs/Doherty H.S.) took over the setter position late in the match and had a career-high 53 set assists and 11 digs.  She also had two aces.

UCCS was dominant offensively through two sets, hitting .318, while adding six aces.

The Roadrunners fought back to grind out a tough third set and hit .372 to win the fourth set to force the deciding fifth set.

The Mountain Lions led 10-8 in the fifth before Metro State ran off four in a row.  Gemignani served four points and Kovach, Heath and Morley each had kills as Gemignani set the three different positions.

However, UCCS again came back and held match point with a 14-13 lead.  Greenhalgh had a kills to tie the match and Causseaux scored two in a row to win the match.

Metro State will host Chadron State at 7 p.m. on Friday.
