Volleyball sweeps past UCCS behind Morley and Phan

No. 9 Metro State swept UC-Colorado Springs 25-20, 25-15, 25-17 on Friday night behind strong performances from seniors Bri Morley (Parker, Colo./Cherokee Trail H.S.) and Ngoc Phan (Lone Tree, Colo./Cherry Creek H.S.).  The Roadrunners improved to 14-3 overall and 6-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while UCCS fell to 9-8 and 4-4.

Morley connected with a career-high hitting percentage of .609 with a match-high 15 kills with just one error in 23 attempts.  Phan dug up 25 attacks, a season high for a three-set match.  She also had a season-high eight assists.

Emily Greenhalgh (Conifer, Colo./Conifer H.S.) had 12 kills for the Roadrunners.  Alysa Heath (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield H.S.) added six, Julie Causseaux (Dumas, Texas/Dumas H.S.) had five and Lauren Quijano (Wildomar, Calif./Elsinore H.S.) had four.

Besides Phan's 25 digs, Metro State was strong all-around on defense.  The team totaled 11 blocks as Causseaux was a part of five and Shayne Kovach (Fruita, Colo./Fruita Monument H.S.) assisted on four.

Setters Darcy Schwartzman (Aurora, Colo./Eaglecrest H.S.) and Vanessa Gemignani (Colorado Springs/Doherty H.S.) helped Metro State hit .343 as an offense.  Schwartzman had 22 assists and Gemignani had 13.  Schwartzman also had eight digs.

The Mountain Lions opened the first set with the first four points, using three Metro State errors.  The Roadrunners broke a 10-10 tie with four in a row and never trailed again after Daleah Whitaker (Denver/Lakewood H.S.) and Heath combined on a block.  Metro State scored five straight points with a 14-13 lead to build a 19-14 lead.  Morley was nearly perfect in the first set with six kills in just seven attempts.  Phan had 11 digs.

Leading 9-5, the Roadrunners scored six in a row in the second set to take a commanding 15-5 lead with Phan serving.  Metro State hit .448 in the second set, its best offensive set of the match, while UCCS hit just .073.

The third set was close early.  Metro State broke an 11-11 tie with six in a row, sparked by four kills by Greenhalgh.

The Roadrunners will host Colorado Mines at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
