Seniors come up big on Senior Night in volleyball

No. 11 Metro State slipped past Colorado Christian 25-18, 23-25, 25-22, 27-25 on Senior Night at Metro State on Friday evening. The Roadrunners wrapped up the regular season with a 22-5 record, including 14-4 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while CCU fell to 15-14 and 10-7.

Seniors Bri Morley (Parker, Colo./Cherokee Trail H.S.), Emily Greenhalgh (Conifer, Colo./Conifer H.S.) and Julie Causseaux (Dumas, Texas/Dumas H.S.) were the team's leaders in kills. Morley had 22 and 10 digs, while Greenhalgh had 14 and Causseaux had 13.  Greenhalgh hit .433 and Causseaux connected at a .500 clip and chipped in with five blocks.

Freshman Lauren Quijano (Wildomar, Calif./Elsinore H.S.) also added 13 kills.

Senior setter Darcy Schwartzman (Aurora, Colo./Eaglecrest H.S.) had 41 assists and Ngoc Phan (Lone Tree, Colo./Cherry Creek H.S.), also a senior had a team-high 15 digs. Metro State's other senior, Shayne Kovach (Fruita, Colo./Fruita Monument H.S.), had two kills and two blocks.

The Roadrunners breezed through the first set, hitting .393 and holding CCU to a .074 hitting percentage.

But the Cougars bounced back with strong serving in the second to force the Roadrunners out of system as they hit just .213.  CCU jumped out to an 11-3 lead with a six-point run, though the Roadrunners closed the deficit to one at 23-22.

Metro State took a 16-10 lead in the third and held on for a three-point win behind a .467 hitting percentage.

With the fourth set tied 14-14, Metro State scored five of the next six points for a 19-15 lead.  CCU rallied and held set point at 24-23.  But Metro State came out of a timeout with four of the final five points of the match.

Metro State will host either Colorado Mines or Regis at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in the quarterfinals of the RMAC Tournament.
