Box Score Denver, Colo. – The No. 3 Metro State women's basketball team defeated Regis on Saturday afternoon 70-64 to move to 9-0 on the season and 5-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Rangers dropped to 5-6 and 3-2.
“This was a battle and we really showed some mental toughness today,” said head coach
Tanya Haave. “Playing on the road in the RMAC is always tough and Regis played hard. This was a good win for us.”
Metro State and Regis would battle back-and-forth in the first half with the Roadrunners shooting nearly 52 percent from the floor and the Rangers shooting 48 percent. The Rangers would lead by as many as four in the first half before Metro State would move in front 22-21 on a Kristen Valencia jumper. Metro State would take a 33-31 lead into halftime.
Despite the Roadrunners never trailing in the second half, Metro State could not stretch the lead until late in the game when the team went on a 7-0 run with just over two minutes to play.
The Roadrunners were led in scoring by
Jasmine Cervantes (Johnstown, Colo./Berthoud H.S.) with a game-high 19 points.
Alyssa Benson (Eden Prairie, Minn./Minnetonka H.S.) and
Brandi Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.) would chip in with ten points each.
Caley Dow (Centennial, Colo./Arapahoe H.S.) would lead the team on the glass with ten rebounds in the contest.
Meghan Hollenga posted a double-double for Regis scoring 13 points and grabbing ten boards.
The Roadrunners will return to action on Dec. 30 to take on Colorado Mesa. The tip-off is slated for 3 p.m. MT at the Auraria Event Center. Tickets are available online at GoMetroState.com.
