Box Score DENVER - No. 3 Metro State held off a tough effort from third-place Western State to win 83-74 on Saturday afternoon at the Auraria Event Center. The Roadrunners improved to 11-0 overall and 7-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while WSC fell to 7-7 and 6-2 in the RMAC.
Jenessa Burke (Aurora, Colo./Highlands Ranch H.S.) scored a team-high 20 points off the bench on 9-of-15 shooting, to help counter Nikki Trujillo's 26 points for the Mountaineers. Trujillo also made 9-of-15, including 5-of-8 from the outside.
Burke added eight rebounds and six assists to lead the team in all three categories.
Caley Dow (Centennial, Colo./Arapahoe H.S.) had 15 points in just 17 minutes, making 5-of-6 from the floor, including a pair of 3-pointers, battling foul trouble all game.
Candice Kohn (Midland, Texas/Midland Christian H.S.) also scored a season-high 12 points on 6-of-8 shooting.
Kristin Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.) added nine points, while
Jasmine Cervantes (Johnstown, Colo./Berthoud H.S.) and
Brandi Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.) scored eight each.
Cervantes tied the Metro State career assists record with five assists, giving her 393 for her four-year career to equal Stephanie Allen's mark. Cervantes also had three steals on Saturday.
Metro allowed 36 points in the first half, the most since Feb. 6, 2010, in a one-point win a Chadron State, taking a 38-36 lead into the intermission after
Kristin Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.) scored the final four points of the half for the Roadrunners. They committed a season-high 10 first-half turnovers, but shot 53.6 percent to hold the two-point lead at the break.
Dow and Cervantes sat much of the first half with two fouls each.
WSC's Nikki Trujillo hit back-to-back 3-pointers for a 50-47 lead with 12:56 left. Trujillo then banked in a three for a 54-50 lead a minute-and-a-half later.
Kohn sparked a 6-0 run with two straight layups for a 58-56 lead, but a 3-point play by Jessica Lankston put the Mountaineers back on top 59-56 with 8:26 left as Dow picked up her fourth foul.
Brandi Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.) hit a 15-foot jumper for a 62-61 lead and Cervantes stole the next inbounds pass and made a layup for a 64-61 lead with 6:50 left. Metro led the rest of the game.
A fadeaway at the right elbow by Burke put Metro in front 66-62 with 6:27 left and she also was fouled on the play as the Roadrunners led 67-62 after the free throw. Burke then drove for a layup on the ensuing Roadrunners possession for a 69-62 lead. Her offensive rebound and layup on the next possession gave Metro a 71-62 lead as she scored seven straight points.
Metro maintained at least a five-point lead the rest of the game, and stretched the lead to 10 in the final minute.
The Roadrunners committed just one turnover the entire second half to finish with 11 for the game and shot 53.0 percent, including 3-of-6 from the outside. WSC made 48.9 percent of its shots and also hit 23-of-31 (.742) at the line as Metro State was whistled for a season-high 26 fouls.
Metro State will travel to Colorado Mines for a 6 p.m. game on Friday.
