Women's basketball rallies from halftime deficit to road victory

Box Score KEARNEY, Neb. – No. 3 Metro State overcame a two-point halftime deficit to rally for a 65-51 win at Nebraska-Kearney on Friday night. The Roadrunners improved to 7-0 overall and 3-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while UNK fell to 0-7 and 0-3.

Caley Dow (Centennial, Colo./Arapahoe H.S.) scored a season-high 13 points on 6-of-10 shooting to lead four players in double figures, scoring 11 in the second half. Alyssa Benson (Eden Prairie, Minn./Minnetonka H.S.) buried 4-of-7 from the outside for 12 points. Jenessa Burke (Aurora, Colo./Highlands Ranch H.S.) had 11 and Jasmine Cervantes (Johnstown, Colo./Berthoud H.S.) scored 10.

Cervantes also led the team with six assists and had five rebounds, while Burke had a season-high 11 rebounds for her first career double-double.

Metro State used a 7-0 run to build a 20-13 lead with 4:25 left in the first half. But the Lopers closed the half with 12 of the final 15 points to lead 25-23 at the break. The Roadrunners shot just 30.3 percent in the first half and committed nine turnovers, while being outrebounded 21-20.

Cervantes led the Roadrunners with six points in their lowest-scoring half of the season.

A 3-pointer by Benson put Metro State up 26-25 with 17:58 left in the game, and Metro held the lead the rest of the game.

The Roadrunners opened the second half on a 12-2 run.

Metro State committed just three turnovers in the second half to win the turnover battle 21-12 for the game. The Roadrunners also outrebounded UNK 40-32 in the game and shot 40.9 percent, hitting 6-of-13 (.462) from the outside.

Metro will travel to Chadron State for a 6 p.m. game on Saturday.
