KEARNEY, Neb. - No. 12 Metro State buried 8-of-13 3-point field goals as the visiting Roadrunners edged Nebraska-Kearney 62-60 on Saturday night. Metro State won its seventh straight game to improve to 22-1 overall and 18-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while UNK fell to 12-11 and 11-8.
The Lopers went on a 12-0 run to take their first lead of the second half at 45-44 with 9:43 left in the game. That was also their only lead of the second half as
Candice Kohn (Midland, Texas/Midland Christian H.S.) drilled one of her career-high four 3-pointers as the Roadrunners quickly gained the lead back on the ensuing possession.
Metro State built its lead back up to 10 points at 60-50 with four minutes left on a layup by
Cassondra Bratton (Arvada, Colo./Pomona H.S.), but that was the team's final field goal of the game as the offense went cold late.
Krisin Valencia made 1-of-2 at the line with 2:27 left for a 61-55 lead. A UNK layup by Shelby Zimmerman with 12 seconds left cut the lead to 61-60.
Emily Wood (Louisville, Colo./Monarch H.S.) then split two free throws to stretch the lead back to two points with 10 seconds to go. Her second shot missed and the Roadrunners got the rebound after the ball went out of bounds. Wood was then fouled on the inbounds play, but the 84 percent free throw shooter missed both attempts. However,
Alyssa Benson (Eden Prairie, Minn./Minnetonka H.S.) corralled the rebound and time expired as Metro State escaped with the win.
Kohn finished with 12 points to lead Metro State, hitting 4-of-5 from the outside. Bratton had 11 points and seven rebounds. Benson scored 10 points, making 2-of-4 from 3-point range.
Tawny Drexler (Golden, Colo./Golden H.S.) added eight points and five boards.
Jasmine Cervantes (Johnstown, Colo./Berthoud H.S.) scored just six points, but pulled down a team-high nine rebounds and dished out six assists to tie for the team lead. Wood also had six assists.
Metro State made just 8-of-19 (.421) at the free throw line, the first time the Roadrunners have shot under 50 percent this season. The Roadrunners outrebounded the Lopers 43-37 and held them to just 39 percent shooting.
It was the first victory for the Roadrunners in Kearney since 2007.
Metro State returns home next weekend for a game Friday against Western New Mexico at 5 p.m. That game will be Pink Zone Night in support of the fight against breast cancer for the Kay Yow Foundation. The Roadrunners will then host New Mexico Highlands on Saturday at 3 p.m. for the 2010-11 Homecoming game.
