Another Strong Defensive Night Pushes Women's Basketball to Win

No. 11 Metro State held New Mexico Highlands to just 29 percent shooting as the Roadrunners topped NMHU 69-45 at home for their ninth straight win.  The Roadrunners improved to 24-1 overall and 20-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while the Cowgirls fell to 13-16 and 8-13.

Cassondra Bratton (Arvada, Colo./Pomona H.S.) scored 16 points and had nine rebounds on Senior Night to lead Metro State.  Brandi Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.) poured in 10 points off the bench.  Kristin Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.) added nine points, six rebounds and tied a career high with five assists.  Jasmine Cervantes (Johnstown, Colo./Berthoud H.S.) added eight points, Emily Wood (Louisville, Colo./Monarch H.S.) had seven, and Tawny Drexler (Golden, Colo./Golden H.S.) and Candice Kohn (Midland, Texas/Midland Christian H.S.) each had six.

Metro State shot a season-high 52 percent from the floor and outrebounded Highlands 40-29.  The Roadrunners also committed just 10 turnovers.

The Roadrunners opened the game with a 16-2 lead just 6:30 into the contest.  Two late 3-pointers in the final minute of the half cut the lead to 34-28 at halftime.

Metro State built its lead back to double digits seven minutes into the second half and maintained a double digit lead the rest of the game.  The Roadrunners led by as many as 27 points in the second half and used a 21-4 run to build that lead.
