Women's Basketball Wins RMAC Championship with Win Over Regis

Box Score

DENVER –
No. 11 Metro State put together one of its best defensive performances of the season and won 57-39 at Regis University on Saturday to capture just the second Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference regular season championship in school history. The Roadrunners were crowned co-champions in 1997-98.

Saturday, they took sole possession of first place on the last night of the regular season after No. 3 Fort Lewis lost 57-51 at Mesa State. Metro State's only loss this season came at Fort Lewis.

Metro State also tied a school record for wins in a season, improving to 25-1 overall and 21-1 in the RMAC.  Metro State went 25-5 in 1997-98.

Cassondra Bratton (Arvada, Colo./Pomona H.S.) had a monster night on the boards, pulling down a career-high 20 rebounds and scoring 14 points. It was the most rebounds for a Roadrunner since Farrah Magee had 23 rebounds against Sonoma State on Nov. 29, 1997. The school record for rebounds in a game is 27 set by Holly Roberts against Regis on Feb. 23, 1991. Bratton shot 2-of-3 from the floor and 10-of-14 at the line, while playing just 26 minutes due to foul trouble.

Alyssa Benson (Eden Prairie, Minn./Minnetonka H.S.) buried four 3-pointers for 12 points. Emily Wood (Louisville, Colo./Monarch H.S.), Jasmine Cervantes (Johnstown, Colo./Berthoud H.S.) and Candice Kohn (Midland, Texas/Midland Christian H.S.) each scored six. Wood also had a career-high eight rebounds. Cervantes dished out a team-high four assists and had a career-high four blocked shots.

Metro State dominated the game defensively, holding a 58-to-27 edge on rebounds and limiting the Rangers to just 23.5 percent shooting.

Regis jumped out to a 4-0 lead, but it was all Metro State after that. The Roadrunners used a 16-1 run to build a 28-11 lead as Benson hit three first-half 3-pointers. However, Regis went on a late 8-0 run and cut the lead to 32-21 at half.

The Roadrunners built their lead to 20 points with seven minutes left in the game and maintained control the rest of the way.

Metro State will host Western State at 5 p.m. in the RMAC Shootout quarterfinals on Tuesday.  This is the first time in school history the Roadrunners have earned the No. 1 seed in the tournament.
