Monster Second Half Gives Women's Hoops 63-44 Win at CCU

LAKEWOOD, Colo. –
No. 13 Metro State overcame a 1-point halftime deficit to drill Colorado Christian 63-44 on the road on Friday night in Lakewood. The Roadrunners improved to 19-1 overall and 15-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference with the win, while CCU suffered its third straight loss and fell to 13-6 and 12-4.

CCU jumped out to an 11-4 lead less than four minutes into the game. The Roadrunners rallied and took their first lead at 19-18 with 3:13 left in the first half. However, the Cougars led 24-23 at halftime thanks to just 28.1 percent shooting for the Roadrunners, compared to 44.0 percent for CCU.

Metro State opened the second half on a 17-4 run over eight minutes, leading 40-28, aided by three straight 3-pointers by Emily Wood (Louisville, Colo./Monarch H.S.). The Roadrunners continued to dominate and led by as much as 24 points, shooting 51.9 percent, while holding the Cougars to just 28.0 percent. Metro State hit 8-of-12 (.667) from the outside in the second half after going 0-for-10 in the first half.

For the game, Alyssa Benson (Eden Prairie, Minn./Minnetonka H.S.) led all scorers with 16 points with 14 coming in the second half as she buried 4-of-8 from the outside in the game, 4-of-5 in the second half. Wood scored 13 points, shooting 5-of-10 from the floor. Cassondra Bratton (Arvada, Colo./Pomona H.S.) added 11 and Jasmine Cervantes (Johnstown, Colo./Berthoud H.S.) chipped in with 10. Cervantes also led the Roadrunners with nine rebounds and five assists.

Christina Whitelaw led CCU with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Metro State will play at Colorado Mines at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
