Women's Basketball Breaks Wins and Home Winning Streak Records in Quarterfinal Rout

Box Score

DENVER -
The No. 10 Metro State women's basketball team broke the school record for wins in a season (26) and longest home winning streak (18 games) on Tuesday night as the Roadrunners coasted to a 70-50 victory over Western State in the RMAC Shootout quarterfinals at home.  Metro State improved to 26-1, while WSC's season ended with an 11-16 mark.

Metro State went 25-5 in 1997-98 for the previous wins record.  The previous longest home winning streak was 17 games from Feb. 20, 1991, to Jan. 3, 1993.

Cassondra Bratton (Arvada, Colo./Pomona H.S.) led one of the best offensive performances of the season for the team, leading with 16 points on 8-of-12 shooting.  She also had six rebounds.  Three others scored in double figures as Brandi Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.) had 14 off the bench, Alyssa Benson (Eden Prairie, Minn./Minnetonka H.S.) scored 12 and Jasmine Cervantes (Johnstown, Colo./Berthoud H.S.) chipped in with 11.  Valencia shot 5-of-8 from the floor and had four rebounds and three steals.  Benson buried 4-of-6 from the outside and Cervantes had nine assists and four steals.

Metro State shot 50 percent, just the fourth time all year the Roadrunners have made at least half of their shots.  They also committed a season-low nine turnovers.

Defensively, Metro State forced 21 turnovers, leading to 23 points, the most since forcing 21 turnovers in the team's only loss of the season at Fort Lewis.  WSC did, however, have a 36-to-27 advantage on rebounds.

Mountaineer guard Brooke Pendergraft buried a 3-pointer on Western State's first possession of the game, but it was all Metro State after that.  The Roadrunners steadily built an 11-point halftime lead at 38-27 as both teams shot over 50 percent in the half.

Metro State used an 11-0 run early in the second half to take a 49-30 lead.  The Roadrunners led by as much as 22 and held on for the 20-point victory.

Metro State will face Adams State, the No. 4 seed, in the semifinals of the tournament on Friday at 1 p.m. in Pueblo at the State Fairgrounds Events Center.
