DENVER – No. 9 Metro State swept No. 21 Regis University 25-18, 25-20, 25-17 on Monday night in a battle of crosstown rivals and top-25 teams. The Roadrunners improved to 10-2 overall and 3-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while Regis fell to 10-3 and 3-1. It was Metro State's second sweep of a top-25 team this season.
Ngoc Phan (Lone Tree, Colo./Cherry Creek H.S.) turned in a stellar defensive performance with 22 digs, helping limit the Rangers to just a .046 hitting percentage. She dug up 12 attacks in the second set.
Bri Morley (Parker, Colo./Cherokee Trail H.S.) led the offense with 10 kills and also added nine digs on the defensive side. She had nine kills in the first two sets.
Lauren Quijano (Wildomar, Calif./Elsinore H.S.) and
Emily Greenhalgh (Conifer, Colo./Conifer H.S.) each had eight kills and
Alysa Heath (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield H.S.) added seven.
The Roadrunner setters
Darcy Schwartzman (Aurora, Colo./Eaglecrest H.S.) and
Vanessa Gemignani (Colorado Springs/Doherty H.S.) dished out a combined 33 assists and helped the team hit .217 for the match.
Metro State scored four straight points to force a timeout with a 7-4 lead in the first as Greenhalgh had a pair of kills, Quijano had another and
Daleah Whitaker (Denver/Lakewood H.S.) and Quijano combined on a block. The Roadrunners built a 17-10 lead before Regis scored six of seven points to cut the lead to 18-15. But Schwartzman served four straight points to push the lead to 23-16. The set ended on Regis' 13th error of the frame, a service into the net.
The second set was much tighter with Regis leading 14-13 before the Roadrunners went on a four-point run to take control.
Metro State dominated the final set. With an 11-9 lead, the Roadrunners ran off seven of eight points to lead 18-11. Regis fought off set point three times before Metro State finished the match with a right-side kill from Heath.
Metro State will play at Colorado Christian at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
