DENVER - Metro State shocked No. 16 Regis University in men's soccer on Wednesday, winning 4-0 at Regis. The Roadrunners improved to 4-2-1 overall and 2-1-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while Regis fell to 4-1-0 and 1-1-0. It was Metro State's first win over a ranked team since defeating No. 25 Fort Lewis 3-0 last season on Oct. 15 and its first road win over a ranked team since 2009.
The win snapped a five-game winless streak for the Roadrunners against Regis, with the last win coming in 2008. The two teams played to four straight ties until Regis won 2-1 in overtime in October last fall.
Regis had an opportunity to score just 20 seconds into the game when
Andrew Mejia (Littleton, Colo./Mullen H.S.) slid in to block a sure goal from Ben Buhler in the box.
Scott Grode (Gilbert, Ariz./Basha H.S.) started the scoring at 14:04, putting in a rebound of his own missed shot after
Brenden Hughes (Fort Collins, Colo./Fossil Ridge H.S.) passed him the ball in the box.
Marc Herschberger (Westminster, Colo./Northglenn H.S.) crossed a ball from the right side to Grode in the center of the box at 29:38 and Grode headed it in to push the lead to 2-0.
That score would remain through halftime and the Roadrunners added one at 59:54.
T.J. Thiebaut (Pueblo, Colo./South H.S.) stole the ball near the top of the box and passed it to
Kevin Pocalyko (Longmont, Colo./Longmont H.S.) who was running towards the net from the left side and Pocalyko scored his second goal of the year.
Pocalyko found the net again eight minutes later after a free kick led to a scrum in front of the net. Grode and Mejia both assisted on the goal as Pocalyko headed in the pass.
Thiebaut nearly pushed it to 5-0 in the 75th minute, but his well-struck shot from the center of the box was stopped. The Roadrunners were also denied on several other chances throughout the game as Regis goalkeepers combined to stop eight shots.
Issa Bissau (Denver, Colo./Chatfield H.S.) made three saves to earn the shutout for Metro State. His toughest save came in the 87th minute on a chance similar to Thiebaut's.
Metro State outshot Regis 21-9 in the game.
Metro State will host Colorado Christian at 3:30 p.m. on Friday.
