GOLDEN, Colo. - Karisa Price (Gilbert, Ariz./Highland H.S.) scored with 4:40 left in the second overtime to give No. 6 Metro State a 1-0 win at No. 10 Colorado Mines on Friday night. The win improved the Roadrunners to 7-1 overall and 3-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while CSM fell to 7-1 and 3-1.
It was Metro State's first-ever win at Mines. The Roadrunners were 0-4-1 in five previous trips to Golden, Colo. CSM reinstated women's soccer in 2006 after dropping it as a sport in the 1980s.
Price, who began the game on the bench, played the majority of the second half and both overtime periods. She provided the Roadrunners with four of their nine shots in the game. Metro State's strong defensive effort held CSM to just seven shots, the second-lowest total for a Metro State opponent this season.
Mines had the game's first scoring chance, though opportunities were few and far between for both squads. Kelsey Neal headed a corner kick towards the net, but the sure goal was kicked away by
Taylor Nicholls (Littleton, Colo./Heritage H.S.) to keep the game scoreless in the 25th minute. Additionally, Metro State goalkeeper
Danielle Quigley (Arvada, Colo./Arvada West H.S.) stopped two first-half shots and three in the game.
Price had a great scoring chance in the 32nd minute, hitting the far post on a shot attempt from the right side just two minutes after subbing in.
Quigley made a save in the 58th minute and that was the final shot on goal for the Orediggers as Metro State controlled play for much of the second half. However, the Mines defense limited Metro State's shots to long distance.
Nicole Pollack (Englewood, Colo./Englewood H.S.) ripped a shot on goal from 25 yards out in the 76th minute for one of the best scoring chances for the Roadrunners.
In the first overtime, Price had a near breakaway early in the first overtime period, but was taken down from behind in the box for no call, keeping the game alive. Price had a wide-open shot in the 97th minute from the top of the box that was saved.
Early in the second overtime period,
Aubrey Fondy (Arvada, Colo./Faith Christian H.S.) was tripped up from behind in the box as she tried to connect on a pass from
Michael' Ann Karas (Arvada, Colo./Faith Christian H.S.), but again no call was made and play continued.
Fondy was involved in setting up the game-winner in the 105th minute. She stole the ball on the left sideline and dribbled into the corner. Her crossing pass was deflected out on the endline, forcing the corner kick.
Hayley Marsh (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield H.S.)'s corner found Price along in the center of the box as the goalkeeper overran the ball, and Price chested the ball into the net to end the game at 105:20.
It was Price's third goal of the year and first career game-winning goal.
In addition to the first-ever road win against Mines, the win snapped a three-game winless streak overall against the Orediggers.
Metro State will play at Colorado Christian at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday.
