LAKEWOOD, Colo. - Bri Morley (Parker, Colo./Cherokee Trail H.S.) led No. 9 Metro State with 22 kills as the visiting Roadrunners won 21-25, 25-20, 25-16, 25-15 at Colorado Christian on Saturday night. Metro State improved to 11-2 overall and 4-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while CCU fell to 6-8 and 3-2. The win also moved the Roadrunners into a tie for first place in the RMAC.
Morley fell one kill shy of a career high for kills in a four-set match and set a new career high for hitting percentage, connecting at .541 (22-2-37). She also had eight digs, four aces and three blocks for a strong all-around performance. Her four aces were also a career high.
Emily Greenhalgh (Conifer, Colo./Conifer H.S.) had 10 kills, followed by
Lauren Quijano (Wildomar, Calif./Elsinore H.S.) with nine and
Alysa Heath (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield H.S.) with eight. Quijano also hit .429 and Heath hit .667 with six blocks as well.
Shayne Kovach (Fruita, Colo./Fruita Monument H.S.) had a career-high seven blocks as Metro State totaled 14 for the match, the most this season.
Setters
Darcy Schwartzman (Aurora, Colo./Eaglecrest H.S.) and
Vanessa Gemignani (Colorado Springs/Doherty H.S.) each dished out 25 assists and helped the Roadrunners hit .360 for the match.
Ngoc Phan (Lone Tree, Colo./Cherry Creek H.S.) led the team with 19 digs, helped limit the Cougars to a .107 hitting percentage.
Metro State dug itself a 4-1 hole in the first set with four errors to open the match, and was unable to recover. CCU built a 16-10 lead and Metro State climbed back to cut it to 23-21, but Ali Weber finished the set with a pair of kills for the Cougars.
CCU opened the second set with a 14-12 lead, but a pair of kills from Quijano tied it up at 14-14. Trailing 17-15, Quijano had another kill, setting up Gemignani for an ace to even the score at 17-17 as CCU lost its final lead of the set. A block by Heath gave Metro State the lead at 18-17. The Roadrunners scored 10 of the final 13 points of the second set, helped by a .458 hitting percentage.
Metro State came out of the intermission on fire in the third set, jumping out to a 16-5 lead, including a run of five straight points and two runs of four points.
The Roadrunners opened the fourth set with the first six points. CCU served the first ball into the net and Morley answered with strong serving that included one ace as she survived a timeout after the fifth point. A block by Heath, a kill from Greenhalgh and a kill from Heath gave Metro State a 16-8 lead. The Cougars crept back into the set, cutting the lead to 18-14, but Metro State scored seven of the final eight points, including the last five as Morley erupted for kills on three of the final four points.
Metro State will host Black Hills State (S.D.) for a non-conference match on Monday at 7 p.m.
