Box Score DENVER - No. 5 Metro State knocked off a ranked Fort Lewis for the second straight time at home, defeating the fourth-ranked Skyhawks 78-51 at the Auraria Event Center on Friday evening. The Roadrunners, unranked at the time, upset third-ranked FLC 75-65 on Dec. 4, 2009, the last time the two teams met in Denver.
On Friday, Metro State moved into a tie for first place in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference with Fort Lewis, improving to 15-1 overall and 11-1 in the RMAC, while FLC fell to 14-2 and 11-1.
The 27-point victory was the largest margin of victory in school history over a top-25 opponent for Metro.
Caley Dow (Centennial, Colo./Arapahoe H.S.) recorded her third straight double-double with a career-high 14 rebounds to go with 12 points. She shot 6-of-11 from the floor and dished out three assists.
Brandi Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.) scored a game-high 13 points, making 6-of-6 at the line and pulling down five rebounds.
Candice Kohn (Midland, Texas/Midland Christian H.S.) provided 10 points off the bench, hitting all four of her field goal attempts. She also grabbed a season-high seven boards.
Emiliy Wood scored nine points and two Roadrunners scored eight points,
Jasmine Cervantes (Johnstown, Colo./Berthoud H.S.) and
Jenessa Burke (Aurora, Colo./Highlands Ranch H.S.).
Kristin Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.) added seven.
No Skyhawks player scored in double figures as they were held to just 25.9 percent shooting in the game. A swarming Metro State defense also forced 18 turnovers and outrebounded FLC 48-33.
Dana Schreibvogel and Katerina Garcia led the Skyhawks with nine points.
The Roadrunners put together one of their most dominant halves of the season, taking a 46-25 lead into the break behind 59.4 percent shooting from the floor, and a strong defense that forced 10 turnovers and limited FLC to 27.6 percent shooting.
Metro tore apart the FLC full-court pressure, outscoring the Skyhawks 24-8 in the paint.
After falling behind 2-0 following a layup following an offensive rebound on the first Skyhawks possession, Metro went on an 11-0 run to lead 11-2 just five minutes into the game as four different Roadrunners got into the scoring column.
A 15-2 run put Metro up 28-12 on a layup by Dow that gave her 10 points for the game with 7:45 left in the half. She led all scorers with 12 at halftime.
The Roadrunners stretched their lead out to 23 points at 46-23 after Wood hit two free throws following a technical foul issued to FLC head coach Mark Kellogg with 36 seconds before half.
The Skyhawks trimmed the lead to 13 with 12:34 left in the second half after two free throws by Jenna Santistevan, but a quick 6-0 run pushed it back to 60-41 with 10:22 left and forced a Fort Lewis timeout.

Brandi Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.) stretched the lead back to 20 at 62-42 with 7:11 left. The Roadrunners led by 20 or more points the rest of the evening, and held a 30-point lead until a 3-pointer by Alex Easterbrook made the final score of 78-51 with five seconds left.
Metro State will look to continue its school-record 25-game home winning streak on Saturday when it hosts Adams State at 5 p.m.
