Dominating defensive performance pushes women's basketball to 18-1 with road win

Box Score GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - No. 4 Metro State held Colorado Mesa to 24.1 percent shooting as the visiting Roadrunners won 78-40 on Saturday evening in Grand Junction. The Roadrunners improved to 18-1 overall and 14-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while CMU fell to 8-11 and 6-9.

It was the 12th-lowest shooting percentage for a Metro State opponent in school history, while the Roadrunners shot 52.7 percent from the floor in the lopsided game. Metro also outrebounded the Mavericks 52-32.

Alyssa Benson (Eden Prairie, Minn./Minnetonka H.S.) drained 6-of-10 from the floor, including three 3-pointers for a game-high 16 points off the bench. Jenessa Burke (Aurora, Colo./Highlands Ranch H.S.) added 10 more points off the bench. Emily Wood (Louisville, Colo./Monarch H.S.), Brandi Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.) and Caley Dow (Centennial, Colo./Arapahoe H.S.) each had nine points. Every Roadrunner scored at least four points.

Metro played an excellent first half defensively, forcing nine turnovers, outrebounding CMU 22-15 and holding the Mavericks to 30 percent shooting. CMU did not hit its first field goal until 8:34 was left in the half.

Brandi Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.) led all scorers at half with seven points and all 10 Roadrunners got into the scoring column before the break.

The Roadrunners opened the second half on a 10-0 run over the first three minutes and built their lead up to 41 points before the final margin of 38.

Tara Gehring led CMU with 11 points. Kelsey Sigl, the RMAC's leading scorer, was held to seven points.

Metro State will look to avenge its only loss of the season at home at 5 p.m. on Friday when it takes on Colorado Christian.
