Cervantes becomes all-time assists leader in win at Mines

Box Score GOLDEN, Colo. - No. 2 Metro State pulled away from a one-point halftime lead for a 63-51 win at Colorado Mines on Friday evening in Golden, Colo. The Roadrunners improved to 12-0 overall and 8-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while CSM fell to 4-10 overall and 3-5 in the RMAC.

Jasmine Cervantes (Johnstown, Colo./Berthoud H.S.) became the school's all-time assists leader in the game after entering tied with Stephanie Allen (1996-2000) with 393. She finished the night with a game-high 19 points, six rebounds and one assist. Cervantes buried 6-of-10 from the floor and 7-of-7 at the line.

Jenessa Burke (Aurora, Colo./Highlands Ranch H.S.) added 13 points off the bench, shooting 4-of-6 from the floor and 5-of-5 at the line. Caley Dow (Centennial, Colo./Arapahoe H.S.) scored nine points and had six rebounds. Brandi Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.) chipped in with eight and nine.

Kristin Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.) pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds and scored three points.

The Roadrunners matched a season high with 10 turnovers in the first half, struggling to a 28-27 lead, while getting outrebounded 17-15. Metro trailed 25-23 with 2:49 left, but five straight points by Cervantes helped the Roadrunners close the half on a 5-2 run and head in with the lead.

Burke scored nine points in the first half during a five-minute stretch, helping Metro hold a six-point lead with 12:58 left. But the Orediggers connected on 4-of-10 from the outside in the first half, led by Stephanie Fogle's 12 on 5-of-8 shooting.

Metro State scored the first six points of the second half and built a 16-point lead with 6:13 left at 49-33. The Orediggers hit a pair of 3-pointers in the final minute to close the final margin.

Despite the poor first half on the boards, Metro outrebounded CSM 39-32 in the game and shot 40.0 percent, while hold the Orediggers to just 36.2 percent. The Roadrunners committed a season-high 18 turnovers.

Fogle scored just two points in the second half, but led Mines in the game with 14 points.

Metro State will travel to Lakewood on Saturday to face Colorado Christian at 5 p.m.
