Second-ranked women's basketball shocked at CCU

Box Score LAKEWOOD - No. 2 Metro State was upset on the road at Colorado Christian on Saturday night, falling 67-59 in Lakewood, Colo.  The Roadrunners dropped to 12-1 overall and 8-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference to fall into second place, while CCU improved to 6-9 overall and 4-5 in the RMAC.

Metro State led 48-47 with 10:20 remaining in the game. But the Cougars went on a 7-0 run over the next four minutes to lead 54-48 with 6:34 to play. The Roadrunners cut the lead to three twice, but could not get closer. CCU made all 10 of its free throw attempts in the final 2:25 to seal the win.

Christina Whitelaw led CCU with 25 points on 7-of-13 shooting, and added nine rebounds, five assists and four steals, helping force the Roadrunners into 16 turnovers that led to 15 CCU points. Jessica Murdoch made 6-of-6 at the line and finished with 14 points for the Cougars.

For the first time all season, no Roadrunners reached double figures in scoring as Jasmine Cervantes (Johnstown, Colo./Berthoud H.S.) and Jenessa Burke (Aurora, Colo./Highlands Ranch H.S.) led the team with nine points each. Brandi Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.) and Caley Dow (Centennial, Colo./Arapahoe H.S.) each had eight. Cervantes pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds.

Metro struggled defensively in the first half, allowing the Cougars to shoot 46.7 percent, including 5-of-11 from the outside. The Roadrunners used an 11-0 run in the first half to take a 21-10 lead with 11:48 left, but CCU came back with a 21-7 run to lead 31-28 with 5:15 left, catching fire with three 3-pointers during the stretch.

Burke broke a 35-35 tie with a layup with 1:51 left and Cervantes added a free throw in the final minute for a 38-35 halftime lead.

Despite the defensive struggle, Metro State shot 50 percent in the first half and outrebounded CCU 22-13, but matched a season-high with 10 turnovers for the second straight game.

Candice Kohn (Midland, Texas/Midland Christian H.S.) and Cervantes led the team with seven points each at halftime. Kohn also had four rebounds and three assists.

For the game, Metro State shot just 37.5 percent and allowed the Cougars to connect at a 46.2 percent rate. The Roadrunners held a 41-36 rebounding margin.

The Roadrunners will head to Colorado State-Pueblo for a 5:30 p.m. game on Friday.
