Volleyball: Marrs' breakout night leads MSU to win at CSU-Pueblo

Box Score PUEBLO, Colo. - Audri Marrs (Parker, Colo./Chaparral H.S.) led No. 20 Metro State with a career-high 14 kills as the visiting Roadrunners rallied for a 23-25, 25-22, 25-20, 27-25 win at Colorado State-Pueblo on Thursday night. The win improved MSU to 11-6 overall and 6-3 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while the ThunderWolves dropped to 11-9 and 2-7.

Marrs, whose previous career highs were six kills and a .286 hitting percentage, led Metro with 14 kills and hit .520 in the process with just one error in 25 attempts.

Two other Roadrunners reached double digits in kills as Alysa Heath (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield H.S.) and Lauren Quijano (Wildomar, Calif./Elsinore H.S.) each had 13. Amy Wong (Litchfield Park, Ariz./Millennium H.S.) added nine, Kylie Haun (Simpsonville, S.C./Hillcrest H.S.) had seven and Kaleigh Carroll (San Antonio, Texas/Ronald Reagan H.S.), inserted into the lineup for the final three sets, had a career-high with six. Carroll had never had more than two kills in a match. She also led the team with six block assists. Heath and Quijano each assisted on three.

Vanessa Gemignani (Colorado Springs/Doherty H.S.) tied a career high with 53 set assists and helped MSU hit .244 in the match.

Freshman Tammy King (Colorado Springs/Liberty H.S.) led the Roadrunners with 15 digs, while Alex Green (Peoria, Ariz./Cactus H.S.) had 14 and Savannah Garcia (Platteville, Colo./Valley H.S.) had 12.

MSU blew a 22-21 lead in the first set to fall 25-23. But Metro rallied to pull out the second 25-22. Trailing 19-18, the Roadrunners scored four straight points, aided by three ThunderWolves errors.

A seven-point run midway through the third set helped the Roadrunners jump out to an 18-10 lead and win 25-20.

Metro State trailed 23-19 in the fourth set. Following a service error for CSUP, Garcia served a five-point run as the Roadrunners took a 24-23 lead, with Marrs putting down a pair of kills. After two ThunderWolves points, Haun, Marrs and Heath each had a kill to finish the set and match for the Roadrunners.

Metro State will play at Western Colorado at 7 p.m. on Friday in Gunnison.
