Volleyball: No. 24 Adams State upsets in MSU in five sets

Box Score ALAMOSA, Colo. - No. 24 Adams State pulled off a 25-19, 25-22, 22-25, 17-25, 15-13 upset of No. 20 Metro State on Saturday night in Alamosa, Colo. The Roadrunners fell to 12-7 overall and 7-4 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while ASU improved to 15-4 and 8-3 in the RMAC.

It was the first win for Adams State over Metro State since 1996.

MSU was just five points away from being swept, trailing 20-19 in the third set when a four-point run gave the Roadrunners a 23-20 lead as they took the third set 25-22.

Adams State led 11-9 in the fourth set when MSU again turned it on with four three-point runs and a four-point run to even the match and take momentum into the fifth.

But several controversial calls went against the Roadrunners in the fifth and they could not overcome an inspired Grizzlies attack. ASU took a 3-2 lead on a play that was overruled as Dominique Davis' shot was initially called out. But after a protest by ASU, the Grizzlies took the point and the lead. On the ensuing serve, Metro's defense had not yet been set before the serve came over the net, leading to an ace as the Grizzlies led 4-2 despite protests from the Roadrunners.

Adams State took an 8-6 lead on another call that went against the Roadrunners when Daleah Whitaker (Denver/Lakewood H.S.)'s shot that landed out was ruled to not have been touched by the Grizzlies as they held a two-point lead at the side switch. That point started a four-point run which nearly buried MSU. However, five straight Roadrunners points tied the set at 11-11 after trailing 11-6. Whitaker put down two kills and Quijano had another during the run.

With the match tied 12-12 after a kill by Amy Wong (Litchfield Park, Ariz./Millennium H.S.), some gamesmanship slowed the MSU momentum. Wong's kill, which appeared to easily land in bounds, was protested for over a minute by the Grizzlies, delaying the ensuing serve and Wong's serve was then easily dug up and led to a quick kill for Davis, who had a match-high 18 kills.

The Roadrunners fell behind 14-12 after an attack error, but a powerful swing by Heath cut MSU's deficit to 14-13 when Whitaker's serve went into the net to allow the Grizzlies to escape with a 15-13 victory in the final set.

Heath led Metro State with 17 kills and Lauren Quijano (Wildomar, Calif./Elsinore H.S.) had 15 with a .462 hitting percentage. Wong put down 13 attacks as well, to go with a match-high 15 digs. Libero Alex Green (Peoria, Ariz./Cactus H.S.) added 10 digs.

Vanessa Gemignani (Colorado Springs/Doherty H.S.) had 48 assists and helped the Roadrunners hit .228, compared to a .211 hitting percentage for the Grizzlies.

Metro State will host Fort Lewis at 7 p.m. on Friday.
