Volleyball: Offense explodes in sweep over Fort Lewis

Box Score DENVER - No. 23 Metro State hit a season-high .441 to sweep Fort Lewis 25-22, 25-20, 25-11 on Friday night at the Auraria Event Center. The Roadrunners improved to 13-7 overall and 8-4 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while FLC fell to 9-10 and 5-6.

Alysa Heath (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield H.S.) led the offensive outburst, putting down a career-high 21 kills and hitting .741 (21-1-27), just missing the school rally scoring era record of .762 set by Anna Mapes in 2010.

Lauren Quijano (Wildomar, Calif./Elsinore H.S.) added to the hot hitting with 14 kills and hitting .440 (14-3-25). Daleah Whitaker (Denver/Lakewood H.S.) had eight kills in just 10 attempts to hit .800 and Kylie Haun (Simpsonville, S.C./Hillcrest H.S.) had seven kills in 17 attempts (.412).

Vanessa Gemignani (Colorado Springs/Doherty H.S.), playing the first two sets and half of the third set, had 35 assists. Betty Van Lith (Eagle, Idaho/Eagle H.S.) had 10 assists playing the final half of the third.

Alex Green (Peoria, Ariz./Cactus H.S.) led the defensive effort with 19 digs and Gemignani added 10.

MSU hit .359 in the first set and kept getting better as the night progressed.

Backed by a .432 hitting percentage in the second, the Roadrunners rallied from an 18-17 deficit for a 25-20 win, scoring eight of the final 10 points.

The third set saw MSU connect at a .577 clip with 16 kills and one error in 26 attempts. Heath had seven kills in seven attempts.

Metro State will host Colorado Mesa at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
