Box Score COLORADO SPRINGS - No. 23 Metro State swept UC-Colorado Springs on the road on Saturday evening, winning 25-14, 25-20, 25-23 in Colorado Springs. The Roadrunners improved to 15-8 overall and 10-5 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while UCCS fell to 15-8 and 10-5.
The past three matches in Colorado Springs between the two teams were won by Metro State in five sets, and the Roadrunners had not swept the Mountain Lions in Colorado Springs since 2008.
Metro State had 10 service aces, the most in a match since 2010, providing the difference for the Roadrunners.
Alex Green (Peoria, Ariz./Cactus H.S.) served a career-high six of them, the most for an MSU player since 2010, and also had a match-high 11 digs defensively.
Offensively, freshman
Kylie Haun (Simpsonville, S.C./Hillcrest H.S.) carried the load with 14 kills and a .229 hitting percentage. She also had two aces.
Lauren Quijano (Wildomar, Calif./Elsinore H.S.) had eight kills, followed by
Alysa Heath (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield H.S.) with seven and
Daleah Whitaker (Denver/Lakewood H.S.) with six. Whitaker also had a .556 hitting percentage and led MSU with six total blocks.
Setter
Vanessa Gemignani (Colorado Springs/Doherty H.S.) had 36 assists and three kills to go with five digs and three blocks.
MSU trailed 6-3 in the first set when Haun went on a five-point run, giving the Roadrunners an 8-6 lead after two service aces. Leading 11-10, MSU broke it open with 12 of the next 15 points to lead 23-12, including three consecutive aces by Green as Metro had five service aces in the first set. The Roadrunners outblocked Division II's best-blocking team 4-0 in the first set. UCCS leads the nation with 2.96 blocks per set.
Tied 9-9 in the second set, another run with Green at the service line led to five straight points for the Roadrunners, including two more aces. MSU led 19-11 in the second and were led offensively by Haun's five kills.
The third set was a set of runs for both sides. MSU took a 12-7 lead after the set was tied 6-6, but UCCS responded with a 6-1 run to tied it at 13-13. Another Roadrunners run gave them a 20-14 lead as they led for the rest of the match.
Metro State outblocked UCCS 9-6 in the match and allowed just one ace for the Mountain Lions.
MSU will be back in action on Friday, Nov. 2 at home against Colorado Christian at 7 p.m.
