Box Score DENVER - No. 17 Metro State cruised to a three-set victory Friday at home over conference opponent New Mexico Highlands, 25-20, 25-18, 25-16. The win moves the Roadrunners to 10-5 overall, and 5-2 in RMAC play. The loss brings the Cowgirls to 6-11 overall and 2-6 in conference play.
The first set was the most hotly contested set of the night as the Cowgirls stormed out to an early 12-7 lead. The Roadrunners would eventually pull out of the early deficit behind their stellar .344 hitting percentage.
The second set was dominated by the Roadrunners and included three kills each from
Alysa Heath (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield H.S.),
Vanessa Gemignani (Colorado Springs/Doherty H.S.), and
Lauren Quijano (Wildomar, Calif./Elsinore H.S.).
In the final set the Roadrunners hit .400 and easily swept the Cowgirls away.
Kylie Haun (Simpsonville, S.C./Hillcrest H.S.) led all attackers with four kills in the set.
Metro State hit .363 as a team and had six hitters with a hitting percentage of at least .500. Quijano had a team-high 11 kills and hit .533. She also had nine kills in her first nine swings.
Savannah Garcia (Platteville, Colo./Valley H.S.) and
Alex Green (Peoria, Ariz./Cactus H.S.) led the way with 14 combined digs on the night. Garcia also scored a quartette of aces tonight which was a new career high.
Gemignani collected 35 of the teams 40 assists, and also added three kills to her stat line.
The Roadrunners look to make it three straight wins as they take on Western New Mexico tomorrow at 4 p.m. at the Auraria Event Center.
