Box Score DENVER - On Dig Pink night at the Auraria Event Center on Saturday afternoon, No. 17 Metro State fell to Western New Mexico 20-25, 25-20, 25-20, 25-22. With the loss, the roadrunners move to 10-6 on the season and 5-3 in conference play. The Mustangs improve to 8-11 with a 5-4 conference record.
The first set victory for the Roadrunners was in large part due to the fact that they bested the Mustangs in digs, blocks and hitting percentage. In fact, Metro's .303 hitting percentage in the first set was the fourth straight set that they had bested the .300 mark and it looked as though they would continue their hot play.
The second set was a seesaw battle that saw seven ties and five lead changes. With the score locked at 18-18, the Mustangs took control of the set and the match. Although the Roadrunners fell in the set,
Kylie Haun (Simpsonville, S.C./Hillcrest H.S.) did manage to net five kills.
After the break, the Roadrunners came out of the locker room and fell behind early. The Roadrunners did manage to have 20 digs in the set, but that wasn't enough to save them from their .089 hitting percentage.
In the final frame, the Roadrunners again faced a large deficit. Down 15-10, the Roadrunners surged to tie the set at 19-19 before four straight Mustang points ended their hopes of a comeback. The loss to Western New Mexico was the first loss to them at home since 2006.
Audri Marrs (Parker, Colo./Chaparral H.S.) had a good night offensively hitting .500 and totaling seven blocks.
Alysa Heath (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield H.S.) led the team with 12 kills.
Vanessa Gemignani (Colorado Springs/Doherty H.S.) added 38 assists to the stat sheet.
Amy Wong (Litchfield Park, Ariz./Millennium H.S.) led the team in digs with 16 and was second in kills with 11.
The Roadrunners now face three straight road games starting on Thursday at 7 p.m. in Pueblo.
