Volleyball: Metro State falls to CCU for first time since 1999

Box Score DENVER - For the first time since 1999, No. 25 Metro State lost to Colorado Christian 21-25, 25-22, 18-25, 25-17, 15-8 snapping a 26-match winning streak against the Cougars. The loss drops the Roadrunners to 18-10 overall. With the win the Cougars move to 23-8 overall, setting a school record in wins. It is the first time since 2008 that MSU has been eliminated from the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournament in the quarterfinals.

The theme in the first set was poor hitting from both teams. Metro State finished the set with a .056 hitting percentage. That was good enough to best Colorado Christian's .000 hitting percentage and pull-out the set 25-21. Kylie Haun (Simpsonville, S.C./Hillcrest H.S.) led all players with four kills in the first set.

The second set was a continuation of the poor hitting from the first set for the Roadrunners. Their .020 hitting percentage and 13 errors were the main reason Metro was unable to squeak out a close one, 25-22. Vanessa Gemignani (Colorado Springs/Doherty H.S.) and Alex Green (Peoria, Ariz./Cactus H.S.) both had five digs apiece in the set.

The Roadrunners came out hot in the third set eventually jumping out to a 10-5 lead early.  Alysa Heath (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield H.S.) and Daleah Whitaker (Denver/Lakewood H.S.) combined for 11 kills as they helped put the Cougars away quickly eventually winning by seven points.

Unfortunately for the Roadrunners the fourth set went as badly as the third set was good for them. The Roadrunners let Colorado Christian hit .423 for the set and would eventually fall 25-17.

For the second time this season the Cougars and the Roadrunners would have to play a five set marathon. It was tight early as both teams traded blows and found themselves tied 5-5 after 10 points. That was the mark in which the Cougars made their run scoring 10 of the next 13 and ending the Roadrunners hopes for a conference title.

Four Roadrunners finished the night in double digit kills. Heath had 19, Haun had 16, Whitaker had 12 and Lauren Quijano (Wildomar, Calif./Elsinore H.S.) had 10.

Audri Marrs (Parker, Colo./Chaparral H.S.) had three blocks on the night.

Metro State will await the NCAA tournament selection to find out if it qualifies for its 13th consecutive postseason.
