Women's basketball: Metro State earns first win of the season over CCU

Box Score DENVER - No. 7 Metro State earned its first win of the season on Saturday at home at the Holiday Inn Select Classic, defeating Colorado Christian 73-61 in non-conference action. MSU improved to 1-2 on the season, while CCU fell to 1-1, a night after scoring 106 points in a win over Chadron State.

Emily Wood (Louisville, Colo./Monarch H.S.) poured in a career-high 16 points—all in the second half—hitting 6-of-10 from the floor and a pair of 3-pointers. Brandi Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.) added 15 points, making 5-of-8 from the floor and 5-of-6 at the line, along with three assists. Tai Jensen (Troy, Idaho/Troy H.S.) scored 12 points and had six rebounds and Amy Nelson (Richmond, Utah/Sky View H.S.) had 10 points and 10 rebounds for her first career double-double.

MSU forced 21 turnovers and held CCU to 38.3 percent shooting, owning a 36-30 rebounding edge. The Roadrunners also shot 45.0 percent from the floor.

Metro State put together its most complete half so far this season in the first. The Roadrunners held CCU to 36.0 percent shooting, while forcing 11 turnovers and outrebounding the Cougars 21-17. As a result, they led 36-31 at the break behind 10 points from Jensen and Brandi Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.). At one point MSU led by nine points when Autumn Chidester (Canadian, Texas/Canadian H.S.) drove for a layup with 3:36 left, giving the Roadrunners a 33-24 lead.

CCU tied the game at 45-45 with 12:30 left, but Metro went on an 11-0 run capped by a 3-pointer by Wood at the top of the key for the largest lead of the game for MSU with 7:45 left. Wood had nine points in a five-minute span at one point in the second half.

The Cougars cut the lead back to seven points with 6:42 left , but a 3-point play from Brandi Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.) pushed the margin back to 10 at 61-51 with 5:36 to go.

Metro State will be back in action on Friday and Saturday at the Northwest Nazarene Thanksgiving Classic in Nampa, Idaho.
