Box Score DENVER - In a conference match with huge implications, No. 23 Metro State was able to pull out a five set victory over Colorado Christian 25-20, 18-25, 25-20, 14-25, 15-12. Going into the match Metro State and Colorado Christian were within one game of each other in the conference standings. With the victory the Roadrunners moved to 16-8 overall and 11-5 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. The loss drops the Cougars to 21-6 overall and into a tie with Metro State with an 11-5 conference record.
The first set brought a couple of surprises for the Roadrunners.
Lauren Quijano (Wildomar, Calif./Elsinore H.S.) and
Alysa Heath (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield H.S.) combined for a hitting percentage of .0625. Usually that spells doom for Metro State, however the team received a pick-me-up from the likes of
Kylie Haun (Simpsonville, S.C./Hillcrest H.S.) and
Audri Marrs (Parker, Colo./Chaparral H.S.) and their combined hitting percentage of .750. Marrs and Haun scored over half of the points for the Roadrunners.
The second set was a tough one for Metro as it hit only .094 as a team. Haun continued her solid play with four more kills.
Tammy King (Colorado Springs/Liberty H.S.) was able to add six digs to the cause, but ultimately Metro fell 25-18.
The third set was an efficient one for the Roadrunners as they came storming out of the locker room. Once Metro broke the tie at 9-9, it never looked back as the Roadrunners cruised to victory in the set. Marrs replicated her stellar first set with a .800 hitting percentage and three blocks.
Savannah Garcia (Platteville, Colo./Valley H.S.) led the team with six digs in the set.
The fourth set was completely the opposite for the Roadrunners. After jumping out to a 6-3 lead, the Roadrunners only managed to score six of the next 30 points with a .065 hitting percentage.
Alex Green (Peoria, Ariz./Cactus H.S.) had four digs in the set for the third time in the match.
The fifth set was accompanied by an electric crowd as both teams battled back in fourth in what was really a microcosm of the match. With the score standing at 9-5 in favor of the Cougars, Metro State rallied with an incredible run, scoring in eight of the next nine points. Heath punctuated the win for the Roadrunners with a kill down the line.
Colorado Christian has now lost 26 straight times to Metro State and has not defeated the Roadrunners since 1999.
The Cougars saw Ali and Andi Weber combine for a .360 hitting percentage, meanwhile the rest of the team hit .082 as a group.
Marrs hit .667 on the night with nine kills. She also had seven blocks on the night.
Vanessa Gemignani (Colorado Springs/Doherty H.S.) has 46 assists on the night. She now has 11 games this season with 40 or more assists.
Four Metro players had at least 10 digs including Green, Garcia, Gemignani and King.
Haun had a career night as she tied the best tally of her career with 15 kills and posted a career high in digs with eight. Heath had 12 kills and
Daleah Whitaker (Denver/Lakewood H.S.) had 11. Green paced the defense with 16 digs.
Metro State will take on Colorado School of Mines tomorrow night at 7 p.m. in the Auraria Event Center.
