Women's basketball: Late run costs Metro State in conference opener

Box Score DENVER - Metro State fell to Regis University 65-62 on Saturday night in opening play of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.  The loss dropped the Roadrunners to 2-4 on the season while the win increased the Rangers to 2-3.

Leading the way for the Roadrunners was Emily Wood (Louisville, Colo./Monarch H.S.) with 17 points including going 3-for-5 from behind the arc.  The leading rebounder for the Roadrunners was Cassie Lambrecht (Colorado Springs/Golden H.S.).

Regis started the game off strong by making their first four shots en route to an 11-3 lead less than three minutes into the game.  Regis had their largest lead of the game at the 14:06 mark in the first half when they led by nine points.

Metro State was able to fight back and go on a 14-6 run over the next five minutes to whittle the deficit down to one point.  They however were unable to capture the lead as Regis went into halftime with a 34-29 lead.  The Rangers shot 58 percent in the first half while holding the Roadrunners to only 39 percent shooting.

In the second half, Regis was able to hold on to its lead until the 2:41 mark when the Roadrunners took their first lead of the game.  The biggest difference in the second half was the free-throw discrepancy as the Rangers made 12 of their 13 free throws and the Roadrunners missed both of their free throws.

The final two minutes of the game however, proved to hold a lot of excitement for the 367 in attendance.  Kristin Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.) made her jumper at the 1:53 mark in the second half to give the Roadrunners the lead at 62-61. Over the next minute and a half there were no points scored by either team as both the Roadrunners and Rangers cracked up the defensive effort.  Sarah Feeney made her shot and the bonus free throw after being fouled to put the Rangers ahead for good with 27 seconds left.  The Rangers tacked on two more free throws over the next 15 seconds and were able to hold on as Cassie Lambrecht (Colorado Springs/Golden H.S.) was unable to connect on a potential game tying three-pointer as time expired.

Leading the Rangers in scoring was Kara Larson with 15 points.  Feeney had eight rebounds for the Rangers to help outrebound the Roadrunners 31-22 on the night.

The Roadrunners will be back in action on Friday when they travel to Colorado Springs to take on UC-Colorado Springs.
