Box Score COLORADO SPRINGS - Metro State snapped a two-game winning streak with a dominating 62-49 win at UC-Colorado Springs on Friday night in Colorado Springs. MSU improved to 3-4 overall and 1-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while UCCS fell to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the RMAC.
An all-around solid performance for the Roadrunners led to the victory as they excelled on defense, holding the Mountain Lions to 30.4 percent shooting and outrebounded them 38-32, while converting 40.4 percent from the floor and committing just 11 turnovers.
Amy Nelson (Richmond, Utah/Sky View H.S.) and
Emily Wood (Louisville, Colo./Monarch H.S.) each scored a team-high 12 points and
Jenessa Burke (Aurora, Colo./Highlands Ranch H.S.) scored all 10 of her points in the first half.
Kristin Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.) added nine points and
Tai Jensen (Troy, Idaho/Troy H.S.) had eight.
Valencia led all players with nine rebounds and Nelson added eight, to go with four assists.
MSU put together its most complete half of the season, leading 30-14 at the break after holding the Mountain Lions to just 4-of-25 (.160) shooting. Burke and Nelson led all scorers with eight points each and the Roadrunners enjoyed a 23-16 rebounding edge and a 4-to-8 turnover margin at the break.
Metro State opened the second half on a 12-4 run to lead 42-18 with 15:21 left, its largest lead of the game. The Roadrunners maintained at least a 15-point lead throughout the second half until a 3-pointer with 24 seconds left trimmed the final score to a 13-point margin.
Lauren Wolfinger led all scorers with 16 points for the Mountain Lions. Valencia shut down UCCS's leading scorer Abby Kirchoff, holding her to 0-of-8 shooting and six points off eight free throw attempts. Kirchoff entered the game averaging 13.2 points and shooting 53 percent.
MSU will play at Colorado State-Pueblo (6-1, 3-0 RMAC) at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday.
