Box Score DENVER - No. 8 Metro State jumped out to a 21-4 lead midway through the first half and went on to a 79-44 win at home against Nebraska-Kearney on Saturday at homecoming in the Auraria Event Center. The Roadrunners improved to 21-2 overall and 17-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
Ten different Roadrunners scored five or more points, led by freshman
Jenessa Burke (Aurora, Colo./Highlands Ranch H.S.) with 12 points and nine rebounds off the bench.
Jasmine Cervantes (Johnstown, Colo./Berthoud H.S.) had nine points and eight rebounds and
Alyssa Benson (Eden Prairie, Minn./Minnetonka H.S.) added nine points.
Kristin Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.) scored eight, as did
Amy Nelson (Richmond, Utah/Sky View H.S.). Four different players had seven, including
Caley Dow (Centennial, Colo./Arapahoe H.S.),
Emily Wood (Louisville, Colo./Monarch H.S.),
Brandi Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.) and
Desiree Collins (San Jose, Calif./Santa Terese H.S.).
Candice Kohn (Midland, Texas/Midland Christian H.S.) had five.
Wood also tied a career high with seven assists and had two steals.
The Roadrunners shot 50 percent from the floor, including 5-of-10 from the outside, and outrebounded UNK 48-to-22. They also forced a season-high 23 turnovers.
Metro led 21-4 with 10:26 left in the first half and took a 31-18 lead into halftime after holding the Lopers to 26.9 percent shooting and outrebounding them 22-13. Benson led the Roadrunners with seven first-half points.
They built their lead to 20 points with 8:18 left and to 30 points with 1:59 to go.
Metro State will travel to Western New Mexico on Friday.
