Box Score DENVER - No. 7 Metro State shot a school record 61.7 percent in an 84-61 win over Colorado Mesa on Tuesday night at the Auraria Event Center in the quarterfinals of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Shootout. The Roadrunners improved to 25-2 overall, while CMU's season came to an end with a 13-14 mark.
Metro broke its previous record of 61.1 percent set earlier this season against Western New Mexico on Dec. 3. On Tuesday, the Roadrunners buried 29-of-47 from the floor. They also hit 8-of-12 (.667) from the outside, coming up just shy of the school-record .700 3-point percentage.
Metro also made 18-of-22 (.818) at the line.
Leading the way offensively was
Caley Dow (Centennial, Colo./Arapahoe H.S.), who scored 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting and had a team-high seven rebounds.
Kristin Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.) and
Emily Wood (Louisville, Colo./Monarch H.S.) each had 12 points and
Candice Kohn (Midland, Texas/Midland Christian H.S.) hit 4-of-5 from the floor for 11 points off the bench.
RMAC Freshman of the Year
Jenessa Burke (Aurora, Colo./Highlands Ranch H.S.) scored nine points off the bench and
Alyssa Benson (Eden Prairie, Minn./Minnetonka H.S.) and
Jasmine Cervantes (Johnstown, Colo./Berthoud H.S.) had eight each.
Brandi Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.) added seven. Cervantes and Benson each had four assists.
Brandi Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.) recorded a career-high six steals as Metro had 11 in the game, forcing 17 turnovers that led to 21 points.
Metro recovered from an ugly defensive first half to finish on a 7-0 run and lead 34-30 at halftime thanks to three straight steals by
Brandi Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.) in the final two minutes. Despite the rough half on defense, the Roadrunners shot 61.9 percent, including 3-of-5 from the outside. CMU countered by burying 4-of-6 from the outside in the first half.
The Roadrunners used a 16-4 run midway through the second half to blow open a 65-48 lead with 7:34 to play. Following a 3-pointer by Benson with 7:02 left for a 68-50 lead, Metro was 5-of-6 from the outside in the second half. The Roadrunners missed their final attempt in the final minutes to miss the school record for 3-point percentage.
Kelsey Sigl led the Mavericks with 18 points.
Metro State will face the winner of Western State and Colorado Mines at 3 p.m. on Friday in Pueblo at the State Fair Events Center in the RMAC Shootout semifinals.
