Women's basketball upset by CCU for second time this season

Box Score DENVER - Colorado Christian shot 56.1 percent and upset No. 3 Metro State for the second time this season, winning 80-66 on Saturday evening at the Auraria Event Center. CCU improved to 11-11 overall and 9-7 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while the Roadrunners dropped to 18-2 and 14-2.

The loss snapped Metro State's school record 26-game home winning streak.

Jasmine Cervantes (Johnstown, Colo./Berthoud H.S.) went over 1,000 points for her career, scoring 12 on Saturday. She also had five rebounds, four assists and three steals. She went over the 1,000-point mark with a layup with 1:56 left.

Caley Dow (Centennial, Colo./Arapahoe H.S.) a career-high 21 points and had 11 rebounds for the Roadrunners.

However, Cervantes and Dow's efforts were overshadowed by CCU's Christina Whitelaw, who was nearly unstoppable, scoring a season-high 27 points on 11-of-21 shooting, with eight rebounds, five assists and four steals.

Metro State struggled defensively in the first half, allowing a season-high 41 points to trail 41-32 at the intermission. The Cougars shot 53.1 percent and hit four 3-pointers. Christina Whitelaw led all scorers with 16 first-half points for CCU and Dow led Metro with 10.

CCU come out strong in the second half and built a 20-point lead with 10 minutes left at 63-43.

The Cougars led by as many as 24 points and maintained a 20-point lead from the 8-minute mark to the 3-minute mark, and held on to a double-digit lead in the final minutes.

Metro State shot just 35.4 percent from the floor, including 2-of-14 from the outside, but outrebounded the Cougars 41-36.

Jenessa Burke (Aurora, Colo./Highlands Ranch H.S.) scored 13 off the bench for Metro and Kristin Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.) added 10 points and 10 rebounds.

B.J. Moyes added 15 points for the Cougars, hitting 6-of-8 from the floor, and Stephenie Allen and Ashley Piper each scored 13.

Metro State will host Colorado Mines at 5 p.m. on Monday.
