Box Score PHOENIX - No. 13 Metro State upset No. 3 Cal State San Bernardino 17-25, 25-17, 25-22, 25-16 on Friday at the Grand Canyon Invitational in Phoenix. The Roadrunners improved to 2-0 on the season's opening day, while CSUSB fell to 1-1. They swept Cal Poly Pomona 25-18, 25-15, 25-22 earlier in the day in the first match of the season.

The win over CSUSB was the highest-ranked opponent Metro has defeated since winning in four sets against No. 3 Wayne State (Neb.) at the NCAA Tournament in 2010.

Amy Wong (Litchfield Park, Ariz./Millennium H.S.) provided her first career double-double with 16 kills and 19 digs while adding four blocks to lead the Roadrunners. Alysa Heath (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield H.S.) also tied Quijano with a match-high 16 kills with nine digs. Sophomore Lauren Quijano (Wildomar, Calif./Elsinore H.S.) hit .400 and had 13 kills.

Metro State hit .265 on the night, while limiting the Coyotes to just .067 by totaling 11 team blocks.

Setter Vanessa Gemignani (Colorado Springs/Doherty H.S.) took over the 5-1 offense and had 46 assists along with six digs.

Alex Green (Peoria, Ariz./Cactus H.S.) had 15 digs and Daleah Whitaker (Denver/Lakewood H.S.) matched Wong and Quijano with four blocks.

Despite hitting outhitting the Coyotes .308 to .280 in the first set, Metro was blown out 25-17 by way of five CSUSB service aces. At one point the Roadrunners were behind 17-8.

But Metro returned the favor in the second set, winning 25-17. Trailing 12-11, a block by Quijano and Audri Marrs (Parker, Colo./Chaparral H.S.) sparked the rally as the Roadrunners never trailed again. They scored the final five points to break away from a 20-17 lead.

Tied 22-22 in the third, MSU scored the final three points. After a kill by Heath, solo blocks by Quijano and Heath closed out the set.

Metro jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the fourth and controlled the rest of the match. A five-point run in the middle of the set gave the Roadrunners an 18-9 lead.

Metro State held the Coyotes to a .000 hitting percentage over the final two sets of the night.

MSU will face Central Washington and No. 17 UC San Diego Saturday morning in the final day of the tournament.
