Volleyball: Metro State splits on Saturday, falls to CWU, but sweeps No. 17 UCSD

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 PHOENIX - No. 13 Metro State split two matches on Saturday at the Grand Canyon Invitational, falling 24-26, 25-19, 25-21, 25-21 to Central Washington, before rebounding with a 26-24, 25-14, 25-11 win over No. 17 UC San Diego. The Roadrunners are now 3-1 after the season's opening weekend. CWU improved to 3-0 with its win, while UCSD dropped to 1-2.

The Tritons were the second ranked opponent Metro State has defeated in the past two days after upsetting No. 3 Cal State San Bernardino on Friday.

Metro was abysmal in serve-receive in its first match of the day as CWU converted 14 service aces. The Roadrunners also hit just .169.

Alysa Heath (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield H.S.) led the offensive attack with 14 kills, followed by 13 from Amy Wong (Litchfield Park, Ariz./Millennium H.S.) and 10 from Lauren Quijano (Wildomar, Calif./Elsinore H.S.). Wong had a double-double with 11 digs. Alex Green (Peoria, Ariz./Cactus H.S.) led the team with 15 digs and Savannah Garcia (Platteville, Colo./Valley H.S.) joined Wong with 11.

Metro shored up its passing against the Tritons, making just five receiving errors. The Roadrunners outhit UCSD .269 to .058.

Quijano had a match-high 10 kills and Heath added nine with eight from Wong, who also had four aces. Redshirt freshman Audri Marrs (Parker, Colo./Chaparral H.S.) had four kills in eight attempts and three blocks.

Green dug up 15 attacks and Wong had 13 digs.

Setter Vanessa Gemignani (Colorado Springs/Doherty H.S.) assisted on 30 kills.

Metro fought off set point at 24-23 with a kill from Quijano, and Gemignani and Wong each followed with kills to end the first set. It was all Roadrunners from that point on as they got off to a 13-3 lead in the second set and a 10-2 lead in the third.

Metro State will host the Colorado Premier Challenge next weekend with nine of the 12 teams ranked in the preseason American Volleyball Coaches Association top-25 poll, including four of the top five teams.
