Box Score GOLDEN, Colo. - No. 23 Colorado Mines held off No. 10 Metro State in four sets at home on Friday, winning 25-13, 20-25, 25-22, 25-23 in Golden. The Roadrunners dropped to 7-4 overall and 2-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while the Orediggers improved to 7-4 and 2-1.
MSU lost despite outhitting Mines .167 to .153 and outblocking the Orediggers 10.0 to 5.0 in the match, thanks to 15 errors in the serving game. The Roadrunners made 11 service errors and four receiving errors, while Mines committed just four service errors.
Alysa Heath (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield H.S.) led Metro State with a career-high 17 kills and had a pair of solo blocks as well.
Kylie Haun (Simpsonville, S.C./Hillcrest H.S.) put down 12 kills and had three solo blocks.
Lauren Quijano (Wildomar, Calif./Elsinore H.S.) added 11 kills and she and
Audri Marrs (Parker, Colo./Chaparral H.S.) each had five assisted blocks.
Vanessa Gemignani (Colorado Springs/Doherty H.S.) dished out 42 assists. Defensively,
Alex Green (Peoria, Ariz./Cactus H.S.) led the way with 15 digs and
Amy Wong (Litchfield Park, Ariz./Millennium H.S.) had 11.
MSU hit .000 in the first set and Mines blew open a 13-8 lead to 23-10 to blow past the Roadrunners. But Metro responded in the second set, led by a .324 team hitting percentage. Leading 21-19, two kills from Heath and one from Quijano built a 24-19 lead.
Heath opened the third set with back-to-back solo blocks. But the Orediggers broke a 22-22 tie with two kills and an attack error to win.
The Roadrunners had a rollercoaster fourth set. They trailed 10-5 early, but then scored eight straight points for a 13-10 lead. Tied 23-23, a kill and a block ended Metro State's night.
MSU will look to rebound at Colorado Christian at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
