Men's soccer: Hughes' overtime header sends Roadrunners past Fort Lewis

Box Score DENVER - Brenden Hughes (Fort Collins, Colo./Fossil Ridge H.S.)' overtime goal proved the difference as Metro State defeated Fort Lewis 1-0 on Friday afternoon.  The golden goal came 5:22 into the first overtime to give the Roadrunners their first overtime victory of the season.

The first half, much like that of the women's game just a few hours earlier was a defensive chess match as neither team was able to find the back of the net.  The best scoring opportunity for the Roadrunners came in the 45th minute from Arek Raclawski (Lakewood, Colo./Bear Creek H.S.).  He was able to get behind the Skyhawks defense and shot on goal.  It was unfortunately saved by goalie Ryan Schaul.  Schaul however was unable to control the save as it rolled over his shoulder and rolled on top of the goal line.  Much to the disappointment of the Metro State faithful, the ref ruled that the ball did not fully cross the line and instead was only partially over.

The first half ended scoreless.  In the second half, both teams turned up the intensity on both sides of the field and in turn the yellow cards started to appear.  Johannes Sander for the Skyhawks picked up a yellow in the 55th minute and then in the 62nd minute teammate Kyle Woodson received one as well.  In the 77th minute, Brenden Hughes (Fort Collins, Colo./Fossil Ridge H.S.) for the Roadrunners picked up a yellow and then Andy Lopez (Phoenix/La Joya H.S.) picked one up in the 86th minute.  Michael Schellenbaum (Mesa, Ariz./Dobson H.S.) also picked a yellow card up in the first half for the Roadrunners.

However, even with the intensity turned up and the scoring opportunities increasing for both teams neither team was able to get a goal as the second half ended in a 0-0 tie.

Finally in the 96th minute, Brenden Hughes (Fort Collins, Colo./Fossil Ridge H.S.) was able to win the game for the Roadrunners off a header from Andrew Mejia (Littleton, Colo./Mullen H.S.).  The Roadrunners had earned a foul near midfield moments before which allowed for Mejia to send in a long pass from Metro's half of the field into the box which Hughes was able to head past the Skyhawks goalie.

Shailer Thomas (Bloomington, Ill./Bloomington H.S.) had eight saves in the game while Ryan Schaul had two for the Skyhawks.  The win increased Thomas' record to 6-3-0 and the loss dropped Schaul's record to 5-3-1.

Metro State will be back in action on Sunday when they host Colorado Mines at 2:30 p.m.  The Skyhawks will play again when they travel to Colorado Christian at 1 p.m.
