Volleyball: Quijano carries Roadrunners to five-set win over first-place UCCS

Box Score DENVER - In a very exciting match on Friday night No. 14 Metro State knocked off UC-Colorado Springs in five sets 25-19, 12-25, 22-25, 25-19, 15-10. With the win the Roadrunners improved their record to 9-5 overall and 4-2 in RMAC play. UCCS dropped to 9-4 and 4-1 in conference play.

The first set was a sloppy effort by both teams that included 16 total hitting errors. It was Metro's 11-3 start that eventually carried the Roadrunners to a victory. Vanessa Gemignani (Colorado Springs/Doherty H.S.) did spark the Roadrunners to a first-set victory by dishing out 12 of the teams 13 assists.

After falling behind by one set, the Mountain Lions came out hungry and put away the Roadrunners fast. For the Roadrunners, it was lowest-scoring set of the season as they only managed to put 12 points on the board.

A completely different Metro State team came out of the locker room for the third set. Unfortunately for the Roadrunners the hot start quickly evaporated into a 12-17 deficit prompting Head Coach Debbie Hendricks to call a timeout. The timeout spurred a small comeback as the Roadrunners would eventually cut it to a two point lead for the Mountain Lions, but it was too-little-too-late as they would eventually fall 25-22. Lauren Quijano (Wildomar, Calif./Elsinore H.S.) did manage to hit .400 on 10 attempts in the set.

After hitting .107 through the first three sets, the Roadrunners put together a fantastic set hitting .386. Quijano and Amy Wong (Litchfield Park, Ariz./Millennium H.S.) combined for 12 kills. The Roadrunners were also able to come up with 23 digs in the set led by Savannah Garcia (Platteville, Colo./Valley H.S.)'s six.

The final set looked glum for the Roadrunners as they fell behind early. However the team found resolve behind four Qujano kills. Qujano's huge night was punctuated by the final match sealing kill bringing her to 19 for the match, one shy of her career record.

UCCS takes their first conference loss on the year and falls to 0-18 in matches played at Metro State.

Wong and Alysa Heath (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield H.S.) combined for 29 kills but also both hit less than .170.

Gemignani served up 52 assists which was a season high and was only one shy of a career record. She also led the team with 19 dig which was a career high.

Savannah Garcia (Platteville, Colo./Valley H.S.) had 14 digs which was one dig shy of her career record.

Audri Marrs (Parker, Colo./Chaparral H.S.) led the team with six blocks including three in the first set.

Metro State will host New Mexico Highlands on Friday October 5 at 7 p.m. at the Auraria Event Center.
