Volleyball: Quijano leads Metro to comeback thriller over No. 5 UCM

Box Score DENVER - Sophomore Lauren Quijano (Wildomar, Calif./Elsinore H.S.) put down a career-high 20 kills as No. 10 Metro State upset No. 5 Central Missouri 19-25, 25-16, 13-25, 25-18, 16-14 in five sets on Friday evening at the Colorado Premier Challenge in the Auraria Event Center. The Roadrunners improved to 4-2 overall this season, while the Jennies fell to 3-3.

Metro State will face No. 1 Concordia-St. Paul (Minn.) at 9:30 a.m. at the Auraria Event Center in the Silver Division. The Golden Bears have won the past five Division II national championships.

Quijano hit .385 in the match, with just five errors to go with her 20 kills in 39 attempts. Freshman Kylie Haun (Simpsonville, S.C./Hillcrest H.S.) put down a season-best 13 kills and Alysa Heath (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield H.S.) added 11. Daleah Whitaker (Denver/Lakewood H.S.) delivered a season-high eight kills from the middle.

Vanessa Gemignani (Colorado Springs/Doherty H.S.) dished out 45 assists as the Roadrunners hit .197 against the scrappy UCM team. The Jennies hit .243. It was just the third time in 31 matches over the past five seasons that MSU has won despite allowing a higher hitting percentage.

Defensively, freshman Tammy King (Colorado Springs/Liberty H.S.) led the team with 18 digs and Alex Green (Peoria, Ariz./Cactus H.S.) had 11. Whitaker and Audri Marrs (Parker, Colo./Chaparral H.S.) had four blocks each.

MSU hit -.094 in the first set and .029 in the third set, having abysmal offensive performances in its two sets lost.

Both teams saved their best for last in the deciding set. The Roadrunners hit .471 in the fifth and UCM hit .409. A three-point run gave the Jennies a 10-7 lead and they maintained a 12-9 lead.

Coming out of a timeout, a service error got Metro to 10 points and sparked the comeback. A block by Gemignani and Whitaker, and a kill from Haun evened the score at 12-12 to force a Jennies timeout.

The teams traded out of the timeout and UCM held match point at 14-13 when another service error tied the set at 14-14 to force extra points. Heath and Marrs combined on a block and following a timeout, a bad set gave the Roadrunners the win at 16-14 after a tough serve from Whitaker.
