Women's basketball: Late free throws help MSU escape CCU with win

Box Score LAKEWOOD, Colo. - Metro State escaped Colorado Christian with a 71-67 win in women's basketball on Friday night in Lakewood, Colo., to stretch its winning streak to seven games. The Roadrunners improved to 9-4 overall and 7-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while CCU fell to 7-5 and 4-4.
 
MSU led by as many as 19 points in the second half, but a tough CCU team came back to trail by just three points in the final minute as Taylor Torres scored 17 of her game-high 21 points in the second half. Metro's Kya DeGarmo (Albuquerque, N.M./Eldorado H.S.) hit 2-of-2 at the line with19.5 seconds left to push the lead to 70-65 and Cassie Lambrecht (Colorado Springs/Golden H.S.) iced the game with 1-of-2 with 10.0 seconds left.
 
Amy Nelson (Richmond, Utah/Sky View H.S.) led Metro State with 17 points on 8-of-16 shooting, her fifth straight game scoring in double figures. Cassie Lambrecht (Colorado Springs/Golden H.S.) had 15 points and five assists, shooting 6-of-12. Kristin Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.) recorded her 11th career double-double with 13 points and a game-high 11 rebounds, adding four assists, three steals and two blocked shots. Brandi Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.) scored nine, DeGarmo finished with seven, and Emily Wood (Louisville, Colo./Monarch H.S.) had six.
 
MSU fell victim to hot shooting by the Cougars early, trailing 7-2 just a minute-and-a-half into the game. Tied 15-15 at the 12:43 mark, Brandi Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.) broke the tie with two free throws and the Roadrunners led the rest of the game, helped by a 3-pointer by Lambrecht that pushed the lead to 20-15.
 
CCU cut the lead to 24-22 with 6:32 left in the first, but Metro State answered with a 10-1 run over the next three minutes. The Roadrunners entered halftime with a 41-27 lead after forcing 12 turnovers and shooting 51.7 percent.
 
For the game, Metro State shot 44.6 percent from the floor and buried 6-of-13 (.462) from the outside. The Roadrunners also won the rebounding battle (33-to-31) and the turnover battle (16-to-19), while holding CCU to 44.0 percent shooting.
 
Torres hit 4-of-7 from the outside, accounting for all of CCU's 3-point field goals.
 
Metro State will play at Colorado School of Mines at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
