Women's basketball: Metro State rallies in final minute to snap FLC's streak

Box Score DENVER - Metro State rallied in the last minute to defeat Fort Lewis 63-60 on Saturday night, outscoring the Skyhawks 6-2 in the final 59 seconds.  The win increased Metro State's record to 11-5 overall and 9-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.  The loss dropped Fort Lewis' record to 8-7 overall and 7-4 in RMAC play.

MSU hit 4-of-4 at the free throw line in the final 17 seconds to secure the win.

Metro State was led by a balanced scoring effort as all five starters scored in double figures for the Roadrunners.  Amy Nelson (Richmond, Utah/Sky View H.S.) and Cassie Lambrecht (Colorado Springs/Golden H.S.) led the way with 12 points each.  Emily Wood (Louisville, Colo./Monarch H.S.) chipped in 11 points for the Roadrunners and both Brandi Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.) and Kristin Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.) scored 10 points. 

Kristin Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.) also collected a game-high 15 rebounds including the 800th of her career in the first half.  She now currently has 809 for her career as a Roadrunner.

The game started off close as the score was tied 13-13 at the 12:59 mark of the first half.  However, after that Fort Lewis responded with a 9-2 run to pull ahead 22-15 at the 10:56 mark.  The lead stayed around five points for the Skyhawks until the Roadrunners went on a 7-0 run over the last 3:26 of the first half to pull ahead 32-30 at halftime.

For the first half Metro State shot 50 percent from the field however was only to connect on 2-of-9 shots from behind the arc (22 percent).

In the second half, Fort Lewis came out strong as it went on a 10-5 run in less than four minutes to open up the half.  However, starting at the 11:40 mark, Metro State went on a 10-2 run to take control of the game with less than six minutes remaining.

With Metro State leading 57-52 at the 3:28 mark of the second half, Fort Lewis responded by going on a 6-0 run to take the lead 58-57 at the 1:13 mark.

Lambrecht scored a layup with 59 seconds left to give the Roadrunners the lead back. A pair of late free throws by Kya DeGarmo (Albuquerque, N.M./Eldorado H.S.) and Lambrecht helped secure the win.

Overall for the game Metro State shot 47 percent for the game.  Metro State also went 16-of-19 (.842) from the charity stripe.

Fort Lewis was led by 17 points from Ashley Kuchar.

Metro State will be back in action Friday when it travels to Colorado Mesa at 5:30 p.m.
