Women's basketball: Comeback at No. 4 CMU comes up just short

Box Score GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - Metro State trailed by 12 points with under 10 minutes left and trimmed the deficit to one late in the game, but its comeback came up just short as No. 4 Colorado Mesa edged the Roadrunners 73-67 in Grand Junction, Colo., on Friday night. MSU fell to 11-6 overall and 9-3 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while CMU improved to 16-0 and 12-0.

The Mavericks led by as many as 19 points in the first half and held a double-digit lead late in the second half, but a 9-1 run cut CMU's lead to just one point at 65-64 with 3:36 left after Kya DeGarmo (Albuquerque, N.M./Eldorado H.S.) buried her third 3-pointer of the game.

Trailing 67-64 with 3:21 left, Metro State went scoreless on its next five possessions. A 3-pointer by Emily Wood (Louisville, Colo./Monarch H.S.) ended the drought and brought the Roadrunners within two points at 69-67 with 10 seconds to go, but the Mavericks went 6-for-6 at the free throw line in the final 15 seconds, including 4-for-4 at Wood's 3-pointer, to seal game.

Wood poured in 19 points for the Roadrunners, hitting 8-of-16 from the floor with four assists. She led four Metro State players in double figures in scoring. Cassie Lambrecht (Colorado Springs/Golden H.S.) hit a pair of 3-pointers and scored 12, while Kristin Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.) and Brandi Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.) each had 10. Kristin Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.) notched her fourth double-double in the past five games with 10 rebounds. DeGarmo had nine points off the bench, hitting all three of her 3-point attempts, and also had four assists.

Metro State outshot the Mavericks, hitting 44.4 percent from the floor and holding CMU to 40.8 percent. But the Mavericks outrebounded MSU 36-32 and owned a large discrepancy in the foul categories--the Roadrunners were whistled for 21 fouls, compared to just eight for the home team. CMU also made 27-of-33 at the free throw line and the Roadrunners made just 3-of-4.

Kelsey Sigl led CMU with a game-high 22 points. Katrina Selsor added 16 points, 11 rebounds and five assists.

Metro State will look to rebound at Western State Colorado on Saturday night.
