Box Score DENVER - Metro State defeated New Mexico Highlands 87-58 on Friday night at the Auraria Event Center. The win increased the Roadrunners' record to 7-4 overall and 5-1 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. The loss dropped the Cowgirls to 3-8 overall and 3-5 in RMAC play.
MSU caught fire shooting, hitting 11-of-21 (.524) from the outside, including 9-of-12 (.750) in the first half. It was the most 3-pointers for the Roadrunners in a game since 2008.
Metro State, which is currently on a five-game winning streak, had five players score in double figures.
Amy Nelson (Richmond, Utah/Sky View H.S.) led the way with 16 points, shooting 7-of-8 from the floor. Both
Brandi Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.) and
Cassie Lambrecht (Colorado Springs/Golden H.S.) chipped in 15 apiece.
Kya DeGarmo (Albuquerque, N.M./Eldorado H.S.) added 13 of her own and
Emily Wood (Louisville, Colo./Monarch H.S.) scored 12 points.
Brandi Valencia (Moriarty, N.M./Moriarty H.S.) led the way on the boards with nine rebounds as the Roadrunners had a 37-26 rebound advantage. DeGarmo just missed a double-double with nine assists. Lambrecht buried all four of her 3-point attempts.
The game started off back and forth for both teams, however, at the 9:57 mark, Metro State went on a 32-12 run to close out the first half. That run helped to give the Roadrunners a 51-30 lead at halftime, their first time over 50 points in the first half in over a year.
In the second half, the Roadrunners continued their strong play as they never led by less than 18 points.
Metro State led the several of the statistical categories including a 26-7 assist advantage over New Mexico Highlands. Metro State was also able to force 27 turnovers by New Mexico Highlands.
New Mexico Highlands was led by Alyssa Lopez with 21 points.
Metro State will be back in action on Saturday when it host Western New Mexico at 5 p.m.
