Women's soccer: Roadrunners pour on the offense in 5-1 win over CMU

Box Score DENVER - Five different players scored for No. 18 Metro State as the host Roadrunners earned a 5-1 win over Colorado Mesa on Sunday. The five goals were a season high for Metro State, which improved to 9-0-3 overall and 7-0-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. CMU fell to 5-7-0 and 4-4-0.

It was the third straight win for MSU Denver against the Mavericks, coming after a three-game losing streak in the series.

The Roadrunners piled on the scoring opportunities early on, but CMU goalkeeper Sarah Schnetzler made several highlight-reel saves in the first 30 minutes.

At 32:28, a handball was called on Mavericks defender Leilani Wiernicki in the box as her hand reached up and hit Abby Rolph (Golden, Colo./Golden H.S.)'s corner kick, earning a penalty kick. Becca Medina (Denver, Colo./Heritage H.S.) converted for the Roadrunners and the flood gates opened.

Just two minutes later Zsuria Phare (Denver/Cherry Creek H.S.) scored her first career goal, taking a pass from Maggie Rojas (Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka H.S.) and dribbling through a couple of defenders and settling for a shot at the top of the box.

Brandi Farley (Colorado Springs/Pine Creek H.S.) pushed the lead to 3-0 early in the second half, scoring unassisted at 54:56. She created a turnover near the top of the box and had an easy 1-on-1 with Schnetzler.

Seven minutes later, Karisa Price (Gilbert, Ariz./Highland H.S.) scored her team-leading seventh goal of the season, deflecting Farley's shot into the net from inside the 6-yard goalkeeper box.

Rojas got a goal of her own at 75:40, one-touching Medina's free kick into the net from the center of the box.

The Mavericks scored their lone goal at 77:02 as Monica Carlos scored her first goal of the season.

Karisa Fernandez (Westminster, Colo./Standley Lake H.S.) played a flawless 67:57 in goal for Metro State to earn the win, making five saves. Nicole Jablonski (White Lake, Mich./Walled Lake Northern H.S.) stopped two shots, but allowed the goal in 22:03.

MSU Denver outshot CMU 31-18 in the game.
