Volleyball: Roadrunners knocked off in five behind strong blockers at FLC

Box Score DURANGO, Colo. - Metro State made 44 attack errors to cost the Roadrunners a five-set loss at Fort Lewis on Friday night, falling 20-25, 25-21, 28-26, 21-25, 15-12 in Durango, Colo. The loss dropped the Roadrunners to 12-8 overall, including 8-4 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. FLC improved to 6-14 and 6-6.

The Skyhawks had 20 blocks in the match, the most for a Metro State opponent since 2003, helping limit the Roadrunners to a .091 hitting percentage.

Alysa Heath (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield H.S.) had 20 kills, but hit just .111, the highest hitting percentage of Roadrunners with 15 or more attempts. Kylie Haun (Simpsonville, S.C./Hillcrest H.S.) provided 18 kills, but was limited to a .069 hitting percentage, while All-America right-side Lauren Quijano (Wildomar, Calif./Elsinore H.S.) had 10 kills, but also had 10 attack errors.

Despite the rough night offensively, Metro State was strong on defense, limiting FLC to a .105 hitting percentage. Haun led the team with 18 digs, followed by 16 from Alex Green (Peoria, Ariz./Cactus H.S.) and 12 from Tiffany Harris (Dublin, Calif./Dublin H.S.). Haun and Harris' totals were both career highs.

Betty Van Lith (Eagle, Idaho/Eagle H.S.) started the match at setter and had 35 assists and five kills before Brandi Torr (Albuquerque, N.M./La Cueva H.S.) came on in relief. Torr had 15 assists.

The Roadrunners took the first set, taking advantage of FLC errors as the Skyhawks hit -.065.

Fort Lewis took it right back to the Roadrunners in the second set, outhitting MSU Denver .243 to .051. Metro State led 15-12, but never led again after the Skyhawks took a 16-15 lead. FLC scored the final four points of the set.

The offensive woes continued for Metro State in the third, trailing 11-3. It took a 7-0 run and a 6-0 run by the Roadrunners to take a 22-17 lead. But the Skyhawks did not go away. Metro State had set point at 24-22, but two straight points went FLC's way to send the set into extra points. With the Roadrunners again holding set point at 25-24, Fort Lewis scored four of the next five points to take a 2-1 lead in the match.

Fort Lewis scored four straight points in the fourth to tie the score at 12-12. A five-point run helped Metro State take control with an 18-13 lead, sparked by a change in setter as the Roadrunners brought in Torr.

MSU Denver made three early attack errors to give the Skyhawks a 4-1 advantage in the fifth. The Roadrunners nearly dug themselves out of a 9-4 hole, rallying with five straight points. Heath caught fire with four kills during a six-play sequence, but the Skyhawks never gave up the lead in the frame.

The loss was just the fourth for the Roadrunners against Fort Lewis since 1996 and the first since 2008.

Metro State will play at Colorado Mesa on Saturday at 7 p.m.
