Volleyball: Rangers too much for Roadrunners in the end

Box Score DENVER - Regis University rallied for an 18-25, 17-25, 25-18, 25-21, 15-12 win at Metro State on Tuesday night at the Auraria Event Center. It was the first loss for the Roadrunners when leading 2-0 since 2002. MSU Denver fell to 13-9 overall and 9-5 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while the Rangers improved to 14-9 and 10-4.

The last time Metro State lost a match when leading 2-0 with Sept. 3, 2002, against Northern Colorado. Tuesday's match was also the fourth straight five-set battle the Roadrunners have played in after topping Adams State, falling to Fort Lewis and defeating Colorado Mesa over the past week-and-a-half.

Alysa Heath (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield H.S.) led the Roadrunners with 19 kills and hit .256 (19-9-39) in the match. Kylee Hoagland (Mead, Colo./Skyline H.S.) added a career-high 12 kills and hit .310 (12-3-29). Kylie Haun (Simpsonville, S.C./Hillcrest H.S.) added 11 kills and Lauren Quijano (Wildomar, Calif./Elsinore H.S.) had 10.

Alex Green (Peoria, Ariz./Cactus H.S.) dug up 20 attacks second straight match. Brandi Torr (Albuquerque, N.M./La Cueva H.S.) had 13 digs and 47 assists, while Haun and Savannah Garcia (Platteville, Colo./Valley H.S.) each had 12 digs.

Quijano and Vasati Fiatoa (Las Vegas, Nev./Bonanza H.S.) each had eight total blocks.

The Roadrunners dominated the first set, jumping out to a 14-7 lead and using four team blocks to hold the Rangers to a .105 hitting percentage. Garcia served a six-point run early in the set to break a 3-3 tie.

Metro State continued to roll in the second, outhitting Regis .346 to -.028 as Heath put down six kills. MSU Denver continued its strong play at the net with five blocks.

The Roadrunners fell behind 4-0 in the third and never gained any momentum, hitting just .094 in the frame.

Metro State never led in the fourth set and trailed by as much as 18-10. Regis used three blocks to limit MSU Denver to a .159 hitting percentage, while putting down a match-best .278 attack percentage of its own.

Six straight Rangers points put them up 9-5 in the fifth. A rally brought the Roadrunners within 11-10, but that was as close as they would get. Regis ran off two straight points coming out of a timeout and the two teams traded points the rest of the way. Regis' final four points came off Metro State errors.

Metro State will host UC-Colorado Springs at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
