Men's Soccer: Late goal propels Colorado Mines past Metro State 2-1

Box Score GOLDEN, COLO.- A late goal by Colorado School of Mines propelled it past No. 24 Metro State 2-1 on Sunday afternoon.  The loss dropped the Roadrunners to 5-2-3 overall and 3-1-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.  The win increased the Orediggers to 7-1-1 overall and 5-1-0 in the RMAC.

Metro State started off the game strong as Danny Arrubla (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton H.S.) scored in the second minute of the game off a cross from Brenden Hughes (Fort Collins, Colo./Fossil Ridge H.S.).  The goal was Arrubla's fourth of the season.

Throughout the remainder of the first half, Metro State played a strong defensive minded game.  The Roadrunners, led by Andrew Mejia (Littleton, Colo./Mullen H.S.) limited Mines' Tesho Akindele (the NCAA Division II current active career goal scoring leader) to only an assist and two shots all game.

For the first half, Metro State outshot Colorado Mines 7-5.

In the second half, Colorado Mines got on the board early as Joe Haines scored in the 48th minute.  Haines scored off Akindele's free kick that was blocked by the wall of Roadrunner defenders and bounced to an open Haines who was able to beat a diving Keegan Hand (Loveland, Colo./Thompson Valley H.S.) for the equalizing goal.

Despite several other potentially good chances, Metro State was unable to capatilize on another goal throughout the rest of the game.  Colorado Mines scored the winning goal in the 84th minute when Jared Herselman score on a free kick that Hand was unable to hold onto as it bounced into the goal.

Hand earned the loss for the Roadrunners as it brought his record to 3-1-2 on the season.  Hand made five saves on the day including several that were from inside the box.

Metro State outshot Colorado Mines 12-11 on the day, but was outshot 7-4 for shots on goal.

Metro State will be back in action on Friday when it hosts Fort Lewis at 3:30 p.m.
