Volleyball: Roadrunners earn another five-set win to upset No. 2 WNMU

Box Score SILVER CITY, N.M. - Metro State rallied for a 21-25, 25-22, 22-25, 27-25, 16-14 win at Western New Mexico to upset the No. 2 seed on the road and advance to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournament semifinals. The Roadrunners improved to 18-10 overall, while WNMU fell to 23-6.

Metro State will face No. 6 seed Colorado Christian on Friday at Colorado School of Mines.

It was the school-record ninth five-set win this season for Metro State.

Kylie Haun (Simpsonville, S.C./Hillcrest H.S.) had a career-high 22 kills and hit .233 (22-8-60) to lead the Roadrunners. Lauren Quijano (Wildomar, Calif./Elsinore H.S.) had 15 kills, followed by Kylee Hoagland (Mead, Colo./Skyline H.S.) with 13 and Alysa Heath (Littleton, Colo./Chatfield H.S.) with 12.

Brandi Torr (Albuquerque, N.M./La Cueva H.S.) had 62 assists from her setter position.

Defensively, the Roadrunners had 104 digs, led by Alex Green (Peoria, Ariz./Cactus H.S.)'s 27 and Savannah Garcia (Platteville, Colo./Valley H.S.) with 21. Haun and Torr each had 15 and Tiffany Harris (Dublin, Calif./Dublin H.S.) added 10.

The Roadrunners managed just four blocks in the match, but overcame it with the big hitting and strong back-row defense.

The Roadrunners put themselves in a 16-5 hole in the first set, but rallied to get within 23-20 before falling 25-21.

Metro State cooled the Mustangs to a .065 hitting percentage in the second and hit .250. A 7-1 run gave the Roadrunners a 19-15 lead. After WNMU tied the score at 22-22, a kill by Quijano and two attack errors by the Mustangs gave the Roadrunners the 25-22 win.

Like the first set, Metro State put itself in a hole in the third, falling behind 18-13. A five-point rally gave the Roadrunners a 20-19 lead, but WNMU again rallied to take a 2-1 lead in the match.

Tied 21-21, the Roadrunners scored three straight points in the fourth and led 24-21 before the Mustangs rallied to tie it at 24-24. Quijano and Hoagland finally finished the set with back-to-back kills to send the match to a fifth set with a 27-25 win.

The fifth set was back-and-forth the whole way. Metro State held match point at 14-13, but a service error extended the match. After a kill by Heath, Hoagland served an ace for the 16-14 win.
