Box Score BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Metro State fell 3-0 on penalty kicks after tying No. 10 St. Edward's (Texas) 1-1 through two overtimes in the South Central Region championship on Friday in Bellingham, Wash. The Roadrunners ended their season with a 14-5-3 record, while the Hilltoppers remain unbeaten at 19-0-2 and advance to the NCAA quarterfinals.
SEU struck early, scoring at 11:34 when Mikayla Engel scored from 16 yards out off a bad clearance by the Metro State defense.
The Roadrunners played well from that point on and held a 15-5 shot advantage in the game.
Metro State finally got on the scoreboard with in the 78th minute when
Karisa Price (Gilbert, Ariz./Highland H.S.) centered a ball from the left endline to
Nicole Pollack (Englewood, Colo./Englewood H.S.) for a wide open shot in the center of the box. It was Pollack's fourth goal of the season, tying the game.
The Roadrunners put two shots on goal in the first overtime period, but remained tied. The best scoring chance came in the second overtime when the Roadrunners put three shots towards the SEU goal, with goalkeeper Lorrie Santoy making two point-blank saves in a matter of seconds in the 108th minute.
After the second overtime, the advancing team was decided on penalty kicks and SEU made its first three shots, while Metro State's first two shots missed and the third was saved.
Karisa Fernandez (Westminster, Colo./Standley Lake H.S.) made two saves in the game for the Roadrunners.
Metro State will say goodbye to four seniors in Pollack,
Becca Medina (Denver, Colo./Heritage H.S.),
Brittany Cito (Littleton, Colo./Dakota Ridge H.S.) and
Maggie Rojas (Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka H.S.).
